Why are there no major Canadian hunting rifle brands?

Previous two posts to hawk are talking about rifles most people cannot afford these days anymore, except the mighty Savage.

How do you get young hunters/shooters into the game at those prices ? You ain't. They'll buy Turkish or whatever.

Especially the young folks who want something new, but not a run-down Swedish archive rifle which they don't understand where the value comes from.

I cannot find the "double face palm emoji" at this time. Consider it posted !

Given the size of our country, and the amount that Canadian's hunt, I'm a bit shocked that we haven't managed some home grown hunting rifle options for the market. Would love to hear why that is.

Because most Canadian companies that have a decent product get taken over mostly by American companies.

Find a shot out Ross sporter and have a new barrel put on? Doesn't get more Canadian than that except a Long Branch No.4 and those make a fine sporter as well.

At least the American companies keep the prices somewhat reasonable, even if they do take over.
Leave it to Canada and you're paying 2-3times as much for the same.

Given the current political shopping sprees of late I feel the canadian govt has hurt us alot more than the USA
That said you can have a great rifle made in Canada by very talented ppl just prepare to get off your wallet. The price will be considerably more than entry level options.
However it's you're choice to have fewer rifles of better quality that are exactly what you want than a safe full of compromised factory options
Some that scoff at the price of a custom rifle have 6 or 7 rifles sitting in their safe that they don't use.

There is nothing saying a person has to buy a new rifle and there are lots of used guns on the market that shoot just fine, if not Canadian made.
These days I am pretty leery of many new rifles on the market anyway.

Will probably spend twice the money on it as usual anything Canadian... rip off..
That's probably unfair!

Although it's possible that markups are high, most manufacturers want to sell their products and pay themselves a profit according to standard margins.

In today's global market, a Canadian manufacturer has to pay their labour a helluva lot more than the factory owner in Turkey, China, or the Philippines. They have to pay more for materials too, tools, electricity, etc, etc. Domestically made products are almost always more expensive than foreign "equivalents".

So maybe it's higher price but is it really a "rip off" if your money stays in country and supports Canadian business instead of large multinationals that cut every corner they can legally cut?? (I should say every corner they can get away with cutting). We can sleep better too knowing that an 8 year old kid wasn't forced to work 20 hours days..

I didn't actually realize that Cadex was Canadian. Ima dig deeper into this and replace my collection if I can manage it.

You could buy a 7 pack of Tikka's for the price of 1 of these??
For sure and what is your point? Always amazed me how we North American always compare cheap with expensive. In Europe they don’t even flinch at the price of some of there rifles/shotguns lol 10k don’t even put you in the high end bracket for a shotgun. As for rifles look at the price of all those R8, 404 and the like, they start at 10k with out any accessories!
The Zenith for 10k you choose your length of pull, you have a carbon barrel with muzzle brake and cap, it is spartan bipod ready, and you have a set of there made in house scope rings!! So yes, you can get a few tikkas, but even better you can get twice as much savage axis!! But it ain’t the point here! The pint is Canadian made by a Canadian dude that has a vison and try to make the best he can for us Canadian! I know for sure I couldn’t make it for less if I could make it at all 😂

It is to be hoped that what is going on with the US will be a wake up call and incite us to produce more here in Canada including firarms. But who will do it when we get more and more restrictions on firearms by the government? There is no reason why Finalnd with 5 million people can produce Tikkas and Sakos but not Canada. There is no reason why Sweden with 11 million people can produce all the cars, buses, jets, and weapons she needs and not Canada

It’s easily 7x nicer than a tikka…and I like tikkas
I recently (2 months ago) purchased this Tikka, chambered in the 7mm Remington Magnum. It arrives very close to the two custom rifles I had built. Some load data has given me .214" groups. This is my first Tikka and it's similar to having another custom rifle.

while i agree , it would be nice to be paying similar prices compared to US manufactured items..... that will never happen.
Our market is miniscule compared to the states and our level of manufacturing and availlabilty of skilled workers is far less than them as well.
It also costs more for tooling and materials here thanx to our often weak dollar on the global currency scale. Just looking at scale of production, those american manufacturers do runs of 100's of rifles at a time. I don't think any Canadian manufacturer can match that scale across multiple calibers and action configurations.
I would love to own a Cadex rifle but they have priced themselves well above what I am willing to pay for a hunting firearm..... same goes for ATRS.
So while I would be eager to support these Canadian manufacturers if my budget supported it, buying one of thier built rifles is out of the cards.
I can fit a higher end build into my budget if I purchase components over time but most of the action only offerings are steeply priced here in Canuckistan.
