When did scopes get so large?

I was gonna leave this alone, but the accusation of 'special forces super sniper operator navy seal' is just... ridiculous.

You got a laugh out of me, is it fair game for me to then say that your 2-7 hunt plex means you wear a 'coon skin hat, tanned leather vest, a buck knife lovin' Davey Crockett wannabe? ;)

.... okay actually that was kind of fun to do.

lol, only ninja I ever been compared to is the Beverly Hills Ninja. BUT, Rocky Rod and Gun Club is pushing out to 1600m this summer! Woohoo!

My hat is similar, but not furry, and I don’t wear my Bowie knife in the front, I don’t have a beard, other than that it’s spot on, I sometimes carry a tomahawk though.

One thing to consider is the typical guy buying highend big scopes probably isn’t putting it on his only rifle. Just to be serious for a second; lots of guy’s have more general purpose practical shoot everything in NA rifles than they can shoot as it is. If he decides one day that he should gear up a super light rifle for a sheep hunt that he’ll never go on, or a buffalo/elephant gun hat is never going to hunt those; or dare I say a longrange rig that he might even shoot way out there once in awhile where is the harm in that? A lot of this stuff isn’t sold to people who don’t know what they’re doing; some of it is going to people who know exactly what they’re doing. Or maybe they’re playing around the edges of what they really want; thats OK too😂

Top rifle scope identifies as short. I don't like limiting the rifle. Most of the time I use 16-18x on my high. My Savage I use it at 4x but nice to have 12x.

We're also shooting further than 25 yards. So that higher power great to act as a spotting scope. Save the whole where am I shooting.

I would say it's less about long range hunting and more about range use - PRS and other games, as well as the infatuation with itty bitty groups.
Yup 👍Long Range Target and little groups .
In the hunting world the 3-9x is still king.
Imagine that 🤪 I shot that Big Moose with a 30-06 and a 3-9 scope set on 3X . Wow 😮 I’m obsolete . 😂😂 RJ

Exactly. Most guys don’t even really need a scope for what they’re doing with their rifles. Even if it’s on a low level, a lot of guys just want to spend whatever the cost to associate with the guys who do it.

A Tasco pronghorn 3-9x40 is on sale at princess auto for 69.99. If you want to spend more than that you need to decide if it’s worth it to you for the number of hours you will spend behind it and for most it will be.

If a guy were putting together a rifle that he knew he was never going to actually use maybe the tasco is the best route

Also: GET OFF MY LAWN.

Scopes that are 2-7x32 or 1.5-5 are by far my favorite. No big bulky scopes with huge turrets for me please :)

I just picked up a 1-8 with 30mm tube and im not even sure i like how bulky it is...

Where did you find that rear sight for your toz8m?

It totally all depends on what it is that you want, or are trying, to do. Hunting big animals or hitting very small things at long distances?

Yea, but when you want to shoot your 22lr out to 500M you need a large scope with a lot of adjustability to get out there.

Or shoot your 450 BM out to 500M. By the way it has a whopping 177" of drop to get out there. You can't do that with your typical 2-7 leupold scope. Even at 300m it is a capable round, but has 39" of drop to get out there. You need an adjustable scope to be able to do that.

You need a scope to match what you need or want the rifle to do.

BUT, I do agree that most of the scopes are getting physically larger even though they don't necessarily have the options. I tend to gravitate to smaller footprint scopes for my hunting rifles that have all the features I want. Best low light glass, adjustable turrets, and still be small foot prints. you pay extra for those features. Best would be the older leupold 2-9x36 scopes, but you no longer can find those. Look at the new eotech 3-9x32, and I imagine others will be following suit. March 1-15x42 @ 10" long, and almost 25 oz weight, and they run $4200.

Yea you can get an arken 5-25x50 for $700, but it is almost 2X the physical size of a comparable march scope, albeit the march scope is 6X the cost. You can't even come close to comparing the glass clarity of those scope though. Is it worth 6X the cost, well that only you can answer.

There is a trend now to get the compact scopes, as manuf are finally catching on that guys want smaller capable scopes for hunting.

2-10 or -12 x 36 w/ bdc reticle or cds, @ <16 ozs would be amazing

Don't be fooled by 'bigger is brighter' either, as the internals in big tubes are often the same as in the smaller tube, just built to get more adjustment range
Glass quality has more to due with low-light capabilities than tube or lens size
then factor in how much hunting is done in the first or last ten minutes of a day, and the light becomes a moot point

either one can be correct, depends on the build of the scope
Exit pupil is likely the most common limiting factor

I have been told that you take the size of the occular lens, divide it by the magnification and that gives you the exit pupil. Hence the larger the occular lens and the lower the magnification, the higher the exit pupil (more light). I`ve studied this a bit and the experts claim that all the larger tube does is allows for more adjustment but does not allow more light. Any experts care to clarify this?
