What is the best SKS?

The TechSight/thinner front sight post is a nice looking setup. How much do you find it improved your grouping/shooting?
 
Someone - Painting the sights helps a good bit. Pic #1-2 below. If you go for a Used SKS I'd take a borescope to check the rifling. My '51 Tula looked really good on the outside, so I bought it (b4 I had a borescope). Pic #3 is the '51 Tula, Pic #4 is the 1980 NIB Chinese F-T.

Inside 100-150yrds improvement for sure- More target to see. Over that, it’s all a wash behind the post anyways (for me). Aim for the white, listen for the ping. Found out long ago SKS and grouping aren’t friends.

Better results with the tech sight and hiviz post combo for off-hand action.

Cool! both sound like nice upgrades

Only time I find the open sights really advantageous is low light

I agree with you completely on that one too. They're not grouping rifles, they're "hitting relevant sized stuff" rifles. Keep it real and they do great

I'm not sure actually, its circular, prob 2 feet across, I'll have to measure it when I'm out there next week. Most of my shooting is at 400/500m using surplus rifles, I use baurnal & chinese surplus for my sks's and handload for my bolt actions in search of loads that reliably hit 500m. Ppl say the No5 is inaccurate but I have handloads that'll ping 4&500 all day with it.

Thats gotta be a lot of fun with the jungle carbine!

About 6 MOA then, gotcha! not a space I'd wanna occupy if someone with an SKS and some skill were around.

That was about the best the last Chinese I had was going to be doing for 5 shot groups with Chinese surplus.
 
The limitations of distance has nothing to do with the SKS but with the 7,62x39 round. It is not a magnum round which leaves room for more powder which you need for a 30 caliber bullet to fly straight at a longer distance.
 
Who makes a good pencil front sight? I have TechSights on my ‘53 Izzy, but never did the front post.

My Factory 26 Norinco hasn’t seen a round.
 
In that at 100 yds I can't 'see' a small bull like on the 100-yd Challenge target, I just aim for the centre of the page. About 5-MOA for a Chinese F-T with a $50 Amazon reflex, for Barnaul SP ammo. The others were Chinese MS, the first 2 were 'ranging' shots ;) And ALL are "paint-can size" hits, about 6-MOA.

And I've seen "hunters" zeroing last Fall doing worse with scopes at the range I use. One used a whole box of 30-06 to get 'that close' at 100. :rolleyes: Good enuf for hunting, I guess.
 
Best mods are a Tapco stock. After that, you inevitably put the factory traditional stock back on.

Then you will appreciate that original is best.

If your eye sight is poor with irons, you can’t accurately gauge the true potential of the rifle.

I could hit a tank sized object with my old one at 400 yds too.....

In all honesty though, my older Chi-com was more accurate than any of the Russian ones that I have shot.... too bad I sold it to Mike.

Yep, "Paint-can" at 100 is OK, but I plan to shoot at a ' + ' target with 'heavier' lines this summer, and also put a scope on to see what the rifle can really do. That 100-yard Challenge target is not made for irons.

See what you can do at 50 or 75. A lot of guys can’t shoot an inch sized group at 50 with irons.
