anyone have a problem with the action bar lock jamming??
bought the gun new in 04, and have only put around 300 shells through it (2 3/4")shooting clays. i always clean and oil it after use, but recently the bar lock will stick after 10-15 shots. after removing the barrel to eject the spent shell, it works fine for another 10-15, sometimes less. other than that, i love the gun. any recommendations or similar problems??

mine does it as well ..............POS, gonna take it to a 3rd and final trip to the smith and if it's still screwd after that then in the lake it goes. This trip will be the 3rd different gun smith and I'm going to see about getting the shell latched replaced b/c I think that's where the problem lies. Good luck

May I ask how much these damn trips are costing you? I'm thinking about taking my Mauser into the gunsmith, but I'm worried they'll rack up the charges.

So far not a dime b/c it was under warranty still, but now it's not and if the latches get replaced then around $30 for parts plus labour.

What kind of ammo are you using? If it is the aluminum head stuff, it can be a pain. I have cured several of these problems by polishing the chamber and making sure there are no burrs around the rim cut at the rear of the chamber.

Personally mine has been polished/deburred 2 times now, that's what the first 2 smiths did. As for shell choice I've had it happen with those wal-mart bricks and top end premium stuff as well, doesn't matter what kind you use. It's caused me to lose out on game(geese/grouse) many times. Downside to living in Manitoba is that there aren't may gunsmiths around these parts and this last one I'm going to try will exhaust my resources unless I get it shipped out to someone in another province.

been using winchester universal 2 3/4" shells(steel heads), the 100rnd packs from wal-mart. hmmm...wal-mart ammo, could be the promblem right there!!lol (buddy buys his 7mm rem mag ammo there, and the prick puts 3 shots in the same hole @100 every time!!)anyway, jealousy aside, i will look into having the chamber polished and checked over. hate to get rid of the gun because it fits me so well, but if i can't rely on it......SOLD!!

just a thought... i've been accused of "over oiling" my shotguns before, could this be part of the probem(excess oil build up??)

Those guns should eat any ammo they are fed. I very seldomly clean my 870s other than wiping water or dirt off of them and they go hundreds and hundreds of rounds and don't ever fail. (I probably should take better care of em)

The 870 only requires 3 drops of oil for lubrication; two in the trigger group and one on the extractor spring. Are you using a lot more than that?

Also can you better desrcribe how it jams up? Is it in the action locked or unlocked position, and what do you have to do to get it moving again? Is it fully locked or just sticky? etc

Cheers

hope i explain this right... after firing a shot, i cannot pull the fore-end down to eject the empty shell, even though the bar lock stays in the up position. i have to remove the barrel, pull the empty out(bar lock is now down), re-install the barrel, and then i can reload and shoot. as for oil, after cleaning with birchwood casey syn safe gun scrubber, i give the trigger assembly a quick shot of b.c. synthetic gun oil and cycle the action a few times(man, i sound like a commercial for b.c. products!!) hope this makes sense

This is a Supermag problem, not nearly as prevelent on the regular 3" chamber. Mine and a bunch of guys I've talked to have the same problem. The shellhead is expanding in the chamber and not letting the spent shell get extracted. For conversation sake, mine will not cycle cheapo Winchester Ammo at all. Federal, is slightly better but I have to shuck pretty hard to get the out. I have to use Remington Light game loads(Which in turn are the cheapest by far) but I have never had a problem with them.

As others have said already, you should look into having the chamber polished and remove any burs.

Yes that makes it a lot clearer, with the action release (tab on left side of the trigger guard) in the DOWN position the action is locked, if you have fired and the tab is UP the action is unlocked and should be able to cycle by cyclig the action. If you cannot cycle with the action unlocked then it is something (probably sticking ) in the chamber. Try slamming th butstock onto the ground to open the action to see if ti works....but keep the ejection port pointed away from your face, there have been a lot fo posts on here wrt the Supr mags having this problem.
Hope thta helps
