I see Saskatchewan is having a Spring Elk Hunt in some areas.

Anyone get one? How is their body condition? Is it only for Antlerless? I can't seem to find the actual regulations, only news stories predictably claiming faux outrage over pregnant cows.

How is this "faux outrage"? They're issuing antlerless tags when cows are weeks away from calving. Those cows have near fully grown foetuses.

The last couple last minute depredation tags have been a joke. No plan whatsoever to link up tag holders with landowners who have problem elk.

Stuff like this makes the hunting community look bad whatever spin you want to put on it.

I understand some of the background issues, but doing this will NOT LOOK GOOD for the urban population who know everything about wildlife management from the MSM.

What is the real story?

I am not pixxing in anyone's cornflakes, so please be kind in your response.

From what I read there was a lot of damage to farmers hay stacks this winter in these zones, and I suspect this is the government placating those affected.

I know that slob hunters have caused issues with landowners in the past but with the new laws for land access a lot of land owners are not giving permission or only giving permission to family and buddies. Access has become more and more difficult. As a result some herds have increased and are causing damage. Increase the tags for the fall and land owners need to allow more access.

This spring hunt is ridiculous and simply wrong.

Did the Suffield cow cull hunt once really because my lifelong hunting partner wanted to, had I known, "no one was participating" here I would've been in like flynn on this hunt. One rm is 20 mi from here. Never liked elk before that Suffield hunt. All I'd had was large rank bulls uncles had brought back from the foothills/livingstone range. Cow I shot at Suffield was some of the best meat I've ever eaten.

........and btw, I Looked for the fetus, size of a fist. May pi$$ some off, but I figured if it was a 20lb calf it'd be on the barbie. Ya, in a heartbeat.

You have to realize elk are like rats, they breed faster than you would believe if not kept in check. Living close to Suffield taught me that. Last time I hunted antelope NW of Bow Island I saw more elk than antelope.

Agreed, more fall tags would be the ideal, but I see nothing wrong with cull hunts When Warranted. Same goes for deer when necessary.

If same next yr and no one wants the tags, I'm in.

Just mpo, flame away.

They used to give the tags to the farmers and the farmers would take you to the problem areas and it would be resolved.
That would make way more sense, issue x number of tags to each farmer designated, give the draw recipients a specific farmers contact info and bobs your uncle, be on this haystack this day at this time and shoot an elk, that simple.
Call me when you get one and I'll bring the fel tractor to load it for you.

As usual I heard the tags sold out online as fast as a Prophet River Vortex sale.

Maybe I read wrong. I think tags that were purchased were purposely not going to be used by some.

Back in AB this was becoming common as well. Mostly by those who buy tshirts from places like mountain equip co-op and have never been out of the city.

saskatchwan miss management agency we had the best big hunting in north america now we have no moose no white tail deer
absolutely a mess
I truly hate to be the guy that says, "where I came from", But, the draw system here in sk sucks dead dog d%ck compared to Ab's draw system.

There, I said it. I don't buy lottery tickets as I view them a voluntary tax on the stupid. In Ab we could literally plan our hunts years in advance knowing with research the priority needed to be drawn in different zones.

You can literally search back decades and see what priority it takes to get a specific tag in a specific zone. You build your priority and apply once you have sufficient P for the zone you choose to be drawn in. Want to hunt this species? Takes P10 to get drawn out your back door, but if you're willing to hunt, x zone it's P3. I truly don't understand why sk hasn't looked at ab's draw system and said, "wow, that's the right way to do it".

Only people in Ab that bit%h about the system are those who think they should be able to hunt a moose/elk/sheep out their back door every year.

Being willing to go where we could get drawn every single year wife and I could hunt most everything, with things like Wainwright as an occasional bonus. Seriously, check out ab's draw system, then ask your mla why Sk is on a, "lottery" (voluntary tax on the stupid)

Again, just mpo and sorry to be the guy that says, "where I was from".

I bet about 10% harvested an animal. It’s always weekend warriors who don’t know how to get permission or some guy whose wife doesn’t let him go after the fact.

What's the difference between shooting a Cow in November (as in BC) or February (as in Montana) or in March?

Anybody that wants to "save" a calf should tag out on Bears every year. I've seen gangs of cow Elk without a single calf.
