I'm going to seriously shop for a CZ 457 MTR or something similar this spring and was wondering if a 20 inch bbl length is worth getting over a 16 inch. The 16 inch looks cooler and probably is a bit lighter but I understand the 20 inch will have more velocity. Whether the velocity difference would be important for longer distance shooting (over 100 meters) is something I'm not sure of.

I'll be using the rifle for personal use and hope to try different match loads and develop a precise shooting rifle. (Something I can enjoy long into the future). I intend on using a bipod with this rig.

I may decide to get into precision rifle later on so would a 20 incher be better for that?

Just watch this video and you'll know the answer to what is the optimum barrel length for a 22lr rifle:

PSE, I'd just like to suggest if you're going to try for precision, I would get a good front rest and a good rear bag instead. I've got a VMTR and just use a Primos front rest and a Caldwell rear bag. Not 'top of the line' but I don't shoot in competition, else I'd get better rests. And use 'better' ammo rather than the 'middle grades' I do now.

You are not going to see a huge difference in consistency. The difference you will see is a better balanced rifle. If you don't care, fill your boots with a 16". If you are going to be shooting PRS or something similar balance matters more than you know.
