Long range PRS build recommendation

I already have a tikka t3x tac a1 but in .308 with 20” barrel. I regret not getting the 24” and will probably go with IBI for new barrel.
I have a 24" IBI sendero on a T3X 308 and its excellent. ATRS took care of the gunsmithing. Every time I get the itch to try for something super custom I realize that it probably won't shoot better than the one I have!

I would suggest going to a PRS match first and seeing if you like it. You would be surprised how supportive the community can be. Sometimes MD might even be able to find you a loaner rifle so you can try it. If you are willing to travel, sorta a requirement for PRS, you can try shooting in the US. Alternatively, you can try rimfire PRS first and see if you like the sport. There is a lot of rimfire PRS in Ontario, I would say Ontario is the rimfire epicenter for PRS in Canada, while the Prairies (Foothill region) is the CF epicenter of PRS in Canada.

See links below for US matches in your region:

In terms of a PRS rifle setup, I would recommend you get a PRS orientated chassis as it will make the shooting experience that much better. If you don't reload, a 6.5CM is a good choice, main downside is it has more recoil than the 'gamer' 6MM (6 dasher, BR, GT, etc). If you reload, I'd consider going 6 dasher, it is by far the most popular PRS cartridge used by top shooters. It is easy to reload for, and uses less powder than 6.5CM and is mild recoiling while maintaining execellent ballistics (105-110 gr range are the most common bullet choices)

You definitely want a steel barrel, the whole point of PRS rifles are to get the balance right so it sits on props naturally. This often requires heavier barrels and even adding weights to the chassis. This also reduces felt recoil and helps you maintain a steady sight picture.

Just a couple general comments... from someone who is still a beginner and just getting into centrefire PRS and shot a bunch of rimfire PRS.

1) Wouldn't chamber a custom PRS rifle in 6.5 CM right off the bat, sure it is fine and what I use, but the world of PRS is mostly dominated by 6mm cartridges and if I was chambering a custom barrel for PRS I would be researching 6 Dasher, 6 GT, etc... If you are set on 6.5CM, consider just getting a stock heavy barrel Tikka that you can rebarrel later on.

3) ACC is awesome, I have the G2 for rimfire. The ESS is not ideal for PRS as the ACCs give you the long, flat, arca forend with ability to add a ton of weight options for balance. If that is not tactical enough for you (fair enough), consider the new LSS G3 that allows you to purchase different forends and then you could have the best of both worlds.

One other point is do not stress too much over getting a sub .5 moa rifle... not that that would not be sweet. I just shoot a heavy barrel Howa and with a load developed for it the accuracy is fine for a beginner PRS rifle. Getting good environmentals for DOPE, good balance for positions, and a good load developed for the rifle have all been more important for my accuracy... oh... and practice reading wind.

Good luck!

Matt

Do you think the new LSS G3 good enough for PRS ? It allows you to switch the hand guard between the tactical one and the other one that seems suited for PrS .

I have never seen one myself, yet, but I am an MDT fanboy, so I am confident it would be fine for PRS with the competition forend, lol. Pretty sure it is shaped similar to to an ACC forend and takes the same accessories.

Speaking of ACC accessories, have you seen the control bridges? They look pretty bad-ass and that may give you the tactical handgaurd look you are after with a PRS ready forend - you can get them with or without a pic rail. I will likely get those for my ACC for no reason other than they look cool!

I really like the idea of the LSS Gen 3, but I haven't actually shot one yet. I've handled a prototype, and it felt nice, but I wasn't able to really put it through its paces. From my limited handling of it, i believe it would do just fine. the 'Competitor' setup is geared to PRS.

If you didn't really care about a hyper modular system and didn't want to break the bank I suspect the ACC Premier gen 2 will give you more rigidity (I have nothing to back this up with other than the notion that the fore end doesn't rely on fasteners) at a cheaper price. Of course, you wouldn't have nearly as much configuration flexibility.

Of all the chassis markers, I find MDT supports canadian PRS shooting the most... I suppose this is expected, being a canadian company.

I am feeling the LSS gen 3. I can even purchase part by part !

I would say the epicenter of PRS and Long range shooting is Alberta and Saskatchewan. The real epicenter is the USA unfortunately

out west definetly has centerfire prs locked down.

ontario has a huge rimfire prs scene, much larger then out west. only because its all we have.
