Anyone here done .308 Win, .338 Federal, .358 Win, or .375 Raptor in a max COAL Long Action with a long barrel and compressed loads with slow powder?

2500 FPS seems doable in a .358 Win 340gr.
2500 FPS seems doable In a .338 Federal with 276-300gr.
2475 FPS has already been done with 212gr LRX.

Thoughts?

Concerns?

Prayers?

It depends on what you want to do
from your topic it look like long range shooting
for longe range = long barrel with the right twist for the bullet you are shooting / best bc bullet / best case for best velocity
Very simplified

if you compaire 308 to 358 win
Whats better for target shootin = 308 why bullet choices

if I was looking for a 50-100 yard dear moose bear gun -
3030 still gets lots of deer/ moose/ bear but you will never see them at a 1000 yard range
358 win and you would not need top perforance or compressed loads, but not a 1000 yard rifle
308 = lots of bullet choces too and still would not need top perforance or compressed load but can be a beginer target rifle or for hunting

Objective.

Heavy payload delivery with strong .308 brass in long actions using custom barrels and twists and 0.4-0.5 G7 b.c. copper lathed bullets ONLY.

Fclass competitors load 308s with 200gr bullets longer than 3" coal and achieve 2650+fps with 30" barrels.

Most use short action, single feed actions so would be very doable in a long action.

10 twist barrels are the popular choice but I've used 11 twist with excellent results.

The Berger twist rate calculator may help choosing twist for bullet length.

Not much information on these load outs.

It seems "new".

I'm thinking...why haven't people been using Long Actions with modern bullets and barrel and Compensators?

U.S. Army uses .300 Win Mag and Canada uses .338 Lapua.

Whats the big deal with a "short action"?

Microseconds of savings in reload time?

I don't understand.

.850-1.0 G1 b.c. @ 2500 fps is better then a .505 b.c. @ 2600 fps b.c. 175gr LR118 load.

If you're building it in a long action and want to use .30cal bullets, why not use a long action cartridge (like 30-06) or do a long action magnum (.300WM, .300PRC, .300 Norma Mag, etc)?

You'll obviously get better performance out of a super long .308 but why not just use a more suitable cartridge?

But they also use AR10s, M1A, M700, Parkerhale M82 and other 308s.

Why they dont use 308 in a LA? Is Because feeding issues. Also alot of comps have a bullet restriction.

I had a M1917/P14 in 308 and feeding was iffy. Then there are people with 762 Nato K98s that have feeding issues.

following witht he theory of a long-heavy with reduced contact = higher velocity-large payload with less effort

Bore riders have been shot in black powder and cast bullet world for the same reasons, and for a long time
not a new concept, but may be new in the more conventional rifle world

Because a 340gr Lathed .358 Win at 2100-2500 FPS in a .277 Casing or Starline Casing will rip chains off of steel plates and buck 100km/hr winds better then a 250gr .338 Lapua.

What is the slowest and most modern KNOWN powder?

H1000?

Well what Comps are a free for all with no rules and isn't the .338 Timberwolf Reliable?

I mean a .17 Rem KAC and 1.0 B.C. .358 Win or .416 Barrel would win 2 gun competitions...with no rules.

Lighter and faster with all A Zone hits at all ranges.

You asked about 308 in a long action and why alot don't use it, comes down to not fully reliable.

Alot of my 308 LA rifles were single shot.

A 340gr .358 Win Blaser with a bunch of 10 round mags would be awesome in a GRS stock.

2500 FPS. Comped. Rapid fire and accurate.

.308 brass is easy to come by. Same with .277 Fury Brass.

Why would someone use a 155gr .300 Winny?

What if you have 120km/hr 90 degree cross winds?

What is better at getting A Zones?

340gr 1.0 b.c. .358 Win @ 2500 fps? 0.5 MOA accurate.

155gr .505 b.c. .300 Win @ 3200 fps? 0.5 MOA accurate?

Pretend I am a newb that works for DARPA.

Retumbo is quite a bit slower than H1000, I know it's not much further down on the burn rate list. But when loading it in the same rounds, it's substantially slower. That's probably the slowest extreme, temp stable powder.
I use alot of US869 which it second or third slowest on the burn rate chart. It is affected by temperature, it's a ball powder, and you can pack a pile of it into a case. Vihtavuori 20N29 is the slowest cannister grade powder available. It's quite large extruded kernals, and is typically used in extreme overbite cartridges, or the 50bmg.

U.S. 869 would be great compressed for Vancouver Island then.

Vihtavuori 20N29 may be good for .358 Win Long over all.

The Finns and Swedes have some excellent powders such as the 155mm Archer system.

Retumbo may be great for a 63k PSi .358 Win 340gr bullet if it doesn't spike.

Anyone wanna use a ####ty dirty old spare 30-06 action and buy a 27 inch custom medium profile barrel to try? I will send .277 Fury and .308 Brass if needed. I can get it

I will help pay too. I am bored.
