ruger 10/22 blows up at the range

not a scratch on the housing. perfect shape.
It was a Hot round firing out of battery possibly setting off the other rounds in the mag, is what I''m guessing to be so violent.
My thoughts as well. Another good argument for polymer mags; no steel fragments flying around.

I have seen the magazine blown out of a Mossberg semi auto, when it fired out of battery, but the bullet remained stuck in the barrel, because the pressure was directed out of the mag well. Most manufacturers stopped marketing semi autos chambered in 17mach2, and 17hmr, because of instances of them firing out of battery.

If a bullet cannot push out a squib/obstruction how does one ring bulge a barrel?
You keep going! ..Until a record 22 Squibs. & after all that, it still didn't 'blow' the barrel apart lol WTF was this guy shooting {still} on?

I find this story very suspect. I witnessed a .22 LR round fired with a stuck bullet in the barrel and it created a slight bulge. Both bullet exited. There is just not enough energy in a .22 LR to blow a gun up. I vote for a made up story…

When I was around 6 years old, I was shooting an old Cooey bolt action, when there was an exceptionally loud bang. The barrel split around 8-10" in front of the chamber, and there were two bullets lodged at that location. That old rifle sat in my fathers basement for the next 50 years or so, until my father passed, and I have never seen anything similar since.

I had something similar happen several years back with a Colt .45 revolver; a bought two boxes of ammo on the way to the range. FIRST round thru a new 1873 revolver which had been thoroughly cleaned before going to the range; the recoil was worse than a .44Mag, horrendous muzzle blast, primer ejected halfway out of case, forcing the firing pin guide bushing back to accommodate the primer. Took a half hour to get the cylinder out. Took the ammunition to my reloading bench, weighed each round in the box and the second box I had purchased(same brand) there was 5 grains difference in weight from lowest to highest in both boxes. Manufacturer denied any responsibility. I’ve never purchased anything in their brand since. Luckily the revolver wasn’t hurt so was able to keep using it with different brands and hand loads.

When I had my shop, I had a collection of damaged barrels. One was from a Cooey Model 60. Barrel was split about 8" back from the muzzle, with a piece blown out. Fired with an obstruction. .22 barrels are often made from leaded screw machine steel, which machines easily and smoothly, but which tends toward being brittle, more so when cold.
It is not at all unusual to see bulged .22 barrels. It is unusual to see .22 barrels which have cracked or broken.

Unusual, but it does happen. I was young, didn't realize that a round was defective, and that the bullet was lodged in the barrel, and fired it again. Had I been older, and more experienced, I would have recognized that the report sounded very different , and checked the bore. I was running the skeet field last week when a shot sounded weak, when the shooter called for another target, I didn't trigger it, and had the shooter check the barrel, only to discover that a wad was lodged part way down the barrel.

To all the people that say "no pics or it didnt happen"
Really !!! whats wrong with you ? seriously....
A horrible event takes place.....I'm in shock....... and the first thing that comes to my mind is WOW what the heck just happened, am I all right, did I suffer a serious wound ?

Standing there Taking pictures wasnt even on the radar !! It was the LAST thing on my mind.
You see horrible events take place on video's and instead of people helping....they are standing there taking video or pictures !!
I'm a confident 66 year old shooter , I tell things the way they are,..I coudnt be bothered fabricating a ridiculous story for your enjoyment . I have a REAL life to live without all the fake drama you see on the internet nowadays.
Shame on you, grow up !!
oh #### pff with the shame on you ####, no ones implying you should have snapped pictures the instant it happened, you settled down, looked for brass, packed the gun up, drove home, probably took the gun out again to inspect, days go by, you drive it to the gun store etc etc, it’s a fair question now that everyone has a camera in there pocket now, it is very odd someone would t take a picture at some point in time since it happened, especially someone whos active on this forum, posted pics of said rifle only days ago, has a catastrophic failure and posted a story about it. After seeing this last post I call %100 bull####.

I agree with you... but a younger generation may have even had it recorded on their phone... another way of life.

He took photos of the rifle and posted about a few days ago, yet in the days after the kaboom he didn’t snap a single photo to go with his posts? Not a piece of brass, the magazine or the rifle? Why wouldn’t you snap a picture for the original post?

But like every accident, there be an investigation. Pictures help the investigation. Just saying your ammo blew up my gun. Theyre gonna say where is the brass? Where is the proof.

Last year a meth head tried to outrun the cops. They crashed their car into a pole outside my neighbours. It caused property and vehicle damage. He is 80 and was out taking photos for insurance reasons. So age has nothing to do with it.

My oil tank failure, the guy that came to drain out the tank, was recording. Because insurance might say he was at fault.

It is nature of an accident to document it, and best way is photos.

Like car accident, try and get photos before the car gets moved. That will help your statement.

Yes, its a very different world. I have an older Flip phone that I do not carry. I dont want to be bothered when I'm out and about.
Not everyone is glued to their phone 24-7
I just got rid of my land line. I dont want a new phone, I dont text and scroll. I use my old phone to "actually Talk" to people.
the picks taken earlier were with an Actual Camera I have at home.
I told a true story of the events , I posted them and you call me a liar. To that end....I will contribute NOTHING MORE to this thread.
ENDED !
This forum sure has changed over the years. a lot of a55 holes on here now.
