Wow, I actually read this entire thread. It was really shaping up to be a great story. Then it morphed into a who dunnit mystery! I bore-down even harder and reached the end.

Ever read an entire mystery novel and the last page is missing? That’s how I’m feeling now men, unsatisfied.

I think alot of people cannot fathom, or believe this can happen by such a little cartage. So comes off as non believable and made up camp fire tale.
OP been a member since 2005, 4,000 odd posts, but lets throw out all his credibility cause he didnt take a photo of this incident....

Not everyone takes a photo of absolutely everything that goes on in their day, i would have taken a pic of this for sure, he did not, and that's ok.

Not saying he is a liar either. Just never seen it happen in 20 plus years of shooting rimfire, so hard to believe, it would cause that much damage and force.

I have seen many rifles chambered for .22 LR blown up with no plugged barrel... just by firing before the bolt was fully forward... Back when CIL was marketing an Anschutz semi auto marked Model 300 I was one of the warranty stations. (Barotto Sports, Calgary - late 60's into the 70's).
Dozens of these rifles were blowing up with case failures. Extractors disappeared, bottoms of magazines blown off. CIL provided new bolts with a screw behind the extractor return spring that was supposed to retain the extractor better. I would polish the chambers a bit looser so the ammo would chamber more easily, replace the breech bolts, replace the magazine, even some trigger assemblies... Then the 300 was discontinued and the 330 came out... same problem... the model number changed through the 300's then 400 and the last one I remember was the 470 but I think Anschutz went higher in later years. Somewhere along the transitions a shell deflector was added to the action port to help prevent the gases and extractors hitting the shooters face when the rifle blew up. This series was the worst rifle Anschutz ever manufactured.

When a .22LR fires out of battery or a case ruptures, it can easily do a lot of damage.

Many moons ago I owned an Anschutz(CIL) 490. I believe that was the model. Very accurate but had two incidents of firing out of battery and both times was with some speedier type ammo which I don’t recall. I switched and only shot subsonic and that ended the SUPRISES. Hard on the ears as well. It can happen.I also seen a new Savage with a laminate stock that fired out of battery and blew the magazine to pieces and put a small crack in the stock behind the mag well. It was in 17HMR which is much worse

Well, I don't know what would happen if a .22 case accidentally got filled up with primer material, but unless there was deliberate sabotage that seems to be the most plausible explanation I've read for what could have caused the original incident.

I don't believe the manufacturing process allows a rimfire case to be filled with priming compound nor powder. It is not plausible in my mind.

The video I've seen how CCI primes and posted a page or two ago, to the prime stage. They got a thin plate with holes. That they scrape primer compound over, filling the holes. Then they remove the hole plate leaving, the primer pellets on another plate. That they turn and dump onto a plate full of cases.

Then another stage pushes the pellet of wet primer compound around in the case. Guess some could get stuck to the rods.

But they visually inspected after. So a case full would be noticeable.

It's worth noting that Anschutz didn't make the Anschutz 300 and similar models such as the 470. (Anschutz hasn't made any .22LR semi autos). As I recall the CIL branded Anschutz semi auto was a rebranded Marocchi SM84 or Sovereign SM84 (one of these may be the original).

As other posts have noted, the problem of out of battery fire explains what happened to the OP's rifle. It's happened in other rifles and has nothing to do with unusual ammo.

CIL contracted Anschutz to supply the .22 rifles and the rifle came with Anschutz stamped on the barrels. Anshutz had them made in Italy in the 60's, but they were considered Anschutz rifles.

Or are you just stupid?
Am I stupid? Well that's certainly up for debate. I'm responding to someone questioning my intelligence while they are seemingly unable to correctly spell the area in which they are located. Make of that what you will...

I can tell you what is stupid, believing that the OP threw his gun out and didn't take a single picture of this once in a lifetime (hopefully) experience.

As usual your correct. Theres numerous videos showing CCI ammo being manufactured and its not going to happen with the priming compound.

I see you havent changed thinking your so superior while living in a rodent/ insect infested, rented living quarters!! Your description , not mine! Keep up your nastiness and you will end up pink slipped which should have already happened in my opinion after the swearing festival you had on me when you blew a gasket not long ago. VORTEX are the best scopes ever. Take a deep breath haha
