Let's see your WW1 rifles!

Hi Claven, I am in South Africa. All sourced here. The Natal Light Horse was raised in the province of Natal for the GSWA campaign at the start of WW I.

That explains a lot. Early SMLE rifles are rare in Canada, we went from the long Lee to the ross, then to the mkiii.

The SMLE mki rifles that are here were generally imported one at a time, I think.

I did see a case of them many years ago. They were in rather rugged condition. No idea of their origin.

Some lovely Great War rifles, and collections, posted here. I have gradually sold off most of the rifles from that era I owned, hanging on only to my Mk III Ross marked to the 43rd Bn CEF (my grandfather's bunch), and this French arm. An Mle 1907 "Colonial" Berthier for which, astoundingly, I managed to find the matching bayonet several years ago.

US Model of 1917 with both WWI and WWII service. Built by Eddystone in September 1917 it was the 6213th of 1:2 million M1917 rifles built (by Eddystone). Saw WWI US Army service. The rifle was one of 100,000 M1917 rifles sold to Canada by the US in early WWII, 1940 or 1941. The Remington made 1917 bayonet is C /l\ and RCAF marked.

Some came from Australia at some point. I knew of one in Ottawa years ago marked to the Australian light horse.
I was told years ago that there was a shipment of Australian smle sent to Canada for training purposes, I sold one last year early date . I believe the current owner still has it in the EE.

Fun thread! Maybe time to show off some more old warhorses from the German side!
