400 yards is easily accomplished by just about any short action cartridge.
Yes, lethality is all about a bullet arriving on target with enough velocity to do its job but I still am not on of those who would advocate a 223 for everything.
That said,
I would not hesitate for a moment sending my 308, 6.5 CM, or my former 7-08 at a moose at 400 yards. I may even consider my 6.5 Grendel at that distance now that I’ve got fast and lethal rounds built for it, although I have yet to kill anything with my cuttingedge bullet loads.
No need to carry the extra weight or length of a “magnum” or pay a premium to feed it either.
