Safest low pressure smokeless that’s still available for antiques

Thought I might add, that Trail Boss is not a special "low pressure powder" compared to a lot of the others, it's just super fluffy to make it extra idiot proof because it takes up more room in a case. Check out Hodgdon and see for yourself.

I'll chime in too.

First off...win231 and hp38 are the same powder.

Second....where has anyone seen unique lately? I haven't seen it locally or online since I cleaned out TNT in regina in 2019...and that was only a pound.

Hodgdon load data for subsonics has literally a dozen fast powders suitable for this cartridge

Might have to look at other cartridges that share the size/load space, but there are lots of options showing up
without having to rely on the old data of TBoss or Unique

Looking around widely, it seems to me that currently manufactured powders of interest might include:

- SwissReload RS 14 (appears to have been made specifically to replace black powder)
- Vihtavuori N32C Tin Star (apparently this one is somewhat similar to Unique, though denser)
- Some of the NobelSport Vectan powders (the basis of most reloading in the French Gheerbrant reloading manual)

I base this on reloading recipes that I find in Gheerbrant and European reloading sources, where these feature quite often for antiques.

Western Metals at one point had some of the Vectan powders. I note that many are listed in the "authorized explosives" list (or whatever it's called) at NRC, so to an extent, the legwork to make it easier to import them has already been done. I haven't figured out if that's the case with N32C Tin Star, but other VV powders are definitely listed. SwissReload products aren't.

I've thought of bother Western Metals about getting more Vectan products in, and the VV distributors about stocking N32C Tin Star. Has anyone else done this? Can anyone think of a place that might be willing to take on bringing in SwissReload?

Unique has been used for friggin decades dude, all you have to do is Google and research lmao

Even Trail Boss - for decades ... there are hundreds of articles and data available and easy to find.

Not available? Wow
Finding Data is easy, finding Alliant powder in Canada. Well you be doing alot of 20$ is 20$.

It is well known that there is an Alliant Powder stortage.

Is There an Alliant Powder Shortage?

Yes, there is indeed a shortage of Alliant powder. This has been confirmed by both the company and numerous retailers.

Why are your powders so hard to find?
The unprecedented demand for commercial ammunition, powder and other reloading components has exceeded the industry's ability to keep product on the shelves at most retail outlets. In response to this industry-wide issue, we are continually making process improvements to increase our efficiency and investing in capital and personnel where we have sustained demand. We remain committed to serving all channels of our business.

Only way to get it, is find someone willing to sell you some.

Then there were rumors they don't want to ship it to Canada because some language BS.

Go onto the Budget Shooter Supply site banner at the top of the page.

They have two very useful "smokeless" powders that will work well in the OP"s pistol.

Shooter's Supply - Pistol

Ramshot - Zip

Sounds like you need to try trailboss my friend. Or have you tried unique? lol
Ha ha ha ha, I ran in to this before as well, makes me want to pull my hair out.

Funny enough I have a powder guy, I message him every month or two and always end up spending too much money on unobtainium powders, ha ha. This month is is H4895 as a general powder for all rifle but last time I ended up with some Blue Dot and a full bottle of Unique along with a full bottle of Trail Boss.

If I were running these in rifles it would suck because they would be gone so fast but trail boss in a tiny tiny pistol cartridge goes a long way.

I am always iffy about smokeless in antiques but since you have a smokeless barrel on it you should be fine, looked at my books and oh look Bullseye, ha ha ha.

Good luck buddy, it can be frustrating loading for these old girls, working on 38/200 right now and considering trying to make the 180gr FMJ WWII version if I can source some inexpensive 0.358in 180gr plated or FMJ pills.

If I say it three times it is suppose to just appear right?

I believe that the the N320 is pretty close if not the same as the Vihtavuori N32C Tin Star.
Just my opinion no official knowledge.
I'm not the kind of guy who is going to try something other than BP without a published recipe.

I'll say this: there's a N320 recipe for the 10.6 Reichsrevolver in Gheerbrant. (Gheerbrant is a reloading manual from France, and I see no reason to view it as any less reliable than other published sources.) A word of caution: although old, Reichsrevolvers really do seem overbuilt, so I would be wary of assuming that other sort-of 44 Russian equivalents can handle these recipes just because Reichsrevolvers can. In fact, I'd be willing to make bets on the reverse being true.

Unfortunately, Gheerbrant is very light on Vihtavuori recipes--it's one of the reason I wish Vectan powders were more commonly available, as it would then open up a whole bunch of published recipes. Western Metals used to have at least A0 at one point, but they've run out.

I have Malfatti (another French reloading book) on order, hoping that they might have some VV data in there.

There also seems to be a German manual, which I haven't been able to get.
