Had a look at Benelli's special drone defense version of their M4 shotgun last week. Not much different on the outside, well except for the special logo on the receiver, but they claim that their new longer forcing cone in the barrel combined with a special modified choke make this gun particularly effective against smaller (and obviously visible) drones on the battlefield. They in fact claim effectiveness out to 100m thanks to their new Advanced Impact system, which is that forcing cone again, larger and longer than in previous models. I did not think to get their recommendation for the ideal shot size to be used but since they say the gun will double as a antipersonnel weapon, they must be considering buck size shot will be deployed. Anyway, these are certainly reflecting a new era in ground warfare that has grown out of the situation in Ukraine. Check out their description of the new AI system at the bottom of the linked page.

this coupled with Norma's new AD-LER ammo is going to be pushed hard by BDT and fielded in short order I bet. Time will tell how effective it will be.

Ok, so here is what this all boils down to.

Benelli re-designed its barrels and calls it the Benelli Advanced Impact System.

And this new system is not just for the M4 or tactical shotguns …. But for their whole line of shotguns … including hunting shotguns. Those barrels basically are over bored, have a lengthened forcing cone … and being over bored of course they would need a new choke system. A complete game changer according to Benelli.

This is a big innovation ... and nobody ... no other company has ever done this before .... right? ;)

Benelli claims that they get up to “20 meters per second” higher velocity out of those barrels and compared to any other 12ga barrel from competitors. And higher velocity translates of course into better penetration/energy downrange while keeping all other variables constant.

Now “20 meters per second” converts to 66 fps!!
Yes, you heard right …. up to 66 fps higher velocity. Up to ... and not guaranteed I guess.

This is a huuuuuuge increase in velocity according to Benelli …. 🙄

And that is the reason why the M4 A.I. Drone Guardian has all the advantages over other shotguns … and that is why it can shoot down drones at 100 meters.

Personally, I think I will keep my trusted 870 setup with a turkey choke and tungsten/TSS shot for a couple more years ...

The only thing Benelli needed to change with the M4 to make it an awesome drone hunter is add a field stock and a 21" vent rib barrel.

It seems like it would be a similar idea to what Vangcomp does to the 590s and 870s forcing cone. But the reason they do it is it is supposed to reduce the recoil pulse and pellet deformation. The idea is supposed to give buckshot a tighter group over a longer range, similar to what Flitecontrol rounds do. I haven't ever seen them say that it increased velocity. I guess hypothetically if your shot is going fast then it might do more damage or have less drop, but I agree it does seem like a gimmick. Having a tighter pattern is suppose to expand the effective range by keeping the projectiles on target and maintaining a more controlled pattern when engaging a target, but Vangcomp developed their process for law enforcement where the need to account for lead going down range is more critical. Considering the speed and detection time of a FPV done, I don't think slightly faster projectiles or a tighter pattern is going to be critical to shooting a drone, because by the time you get a chance to actually shoot one its not going to be very far away and you probably want a fairly open spread. I haven"t shot a drone, lol, but i can't imagine it take much shot to disable one.
 
I wonder if turkey loads and chokes be the ticket?
I seen a report from Ukraine that stated buckshot was preferred as birdshot loses effectiveness too quickly at distance.

Not to mention that troops at the front at least may also have to deal with enemy infantry.
