Long range shooting

The new Tikka T3X ACE Target in 6.5creedmoor with 26inch barrel or 308win with 24inch barrel would fit most of your needs before you go customize.
If you are going to ORA's match in Borden, then 6.5cm with longer barrel would be easier to shoot 1000yard target.
After you shoot out the barrel, there are quite a few barrel maker on the market for you to try different calibers without buying a new gun.
DNT 7-35 should meet all your target shooting needs or you can save money for some middle price range ones like the Zeiss LRP S3 6-36.

Perhaps not long range but medium range. My club only goes to 300.
Noting wrong with either .308 or 6.5CM but if 300m is your range’s max I’d go with a .223 with a fast twist rate. 1:7-1:8 would work well, if you’re only shooting targets it will allow you to shoot more with the cost of factory ammo or components if you hand load.

I'd also suggest looking at the .223 Remington with "heavies". Like 75 the 77tmk 75 hpbt etc.
They're an absolute joy to shoot especially if you're a recoil wimp like me
For glass I suggest a maven rs1.2.
Top tier glass in a medium price point

Read page 2... he already bought a 6.5 cm in the rifle he was eying up for awhile.

My entire tax return got my my obnoxious rifle, my pension got my a layaway for my new used scope. 338 LM Savage in a MDT chassis . Over 4k invested but I'm hitting what I'm aiming at, IF my adjustment are correct. This costs almost 4 $ a pop, but I'm a retired vet, who REALLY REALLY wants a Milk Jug Challenge sticker.

Is that really a 50x scope? That would be WAY too much magnification for any serious distance. It will be unusable beyond 25-30x.

You bought into the notion that a massive round is needed to shoot long distances and that huge magnification is also needed. Neither are true. I shot to 2000 yds with a hot rodded 243 and a 16x scope. Way less powder, way less recoil and way less cost.

Recently I have been playing with a 338 LM and can't say I like it much. Too much recoil and blast pressure to be fun and the thing is just not as accurate as I'd like. There are much better choices for ELR shooting.

My current favourite ELR rifle is a 300 Norma Mag and a 25x scope. Still a bit spendy but way more fun to shoot than the 338LM.

yup 50 power maxed out. it works great I'll be using it at 1km thank you very much. As to being usable at long ranges, it was Paul Rebin[sp]. as to being nice to shoot, it's not my tac 50. While lighter this thing weighs approximately 26 lbs which eats a lot of felt recoil. I've gone through 60 + rounds in one sitting, then switched to a .308 Win to do some more.

Have you actually used such magnification at distance? I have and can assure you that very high magnification causes numerous problems.

Mirage will be a massive problem. I used a 36x scope and it was like looking through the bottom of a dirty soda bottle. High magnification also causes issues with shake. It will be basically impossible to hold the reticle steady on the target. It was so bad it gave me a headache trying to use that scope.

1km isn't all that far for the cartridges you are talking about. Most centre fire rifle cartridges are capable of that sort of distance. $4 a round seems overkill for such a short distance.

Ahh I guess I missed your lecture while I was in, have you heard of the acronym YMMV? Yes I have used such optics before, 1km is short considering I regularly plink at 650 m with lets see, 6.5 Grendel, 6.5 x55 ,.308 Win AND 338 LM. Me, im going for the grand slam 1000m, 1200m, 1500m, and 1760m, using less than 10 rounds per distance. It's great you did it with a "hotrodded .243," my rifle is an out of a box Savage with an optic and bipod added. I've handled and shot some very nonstandard custom rifles, mine with no exceptions are how the came from the factory . If the .243 was was capable of doing it consistently maybe the CF made a HUGE mistake getting the Timberwolf and the Tac 50I know it would be a lot lighter in the mountains where every once matters. Maybe if you didn't /don't like shooting one that's fine, but I like knowing that I do like shooting mine. And back to the recoil and cost that's not your problem, nor is it mine as I can easily deal with both.
Do have a good day, and don't put your problems with your limitations on me.

I don’t CARE what you say or think ! WE F Class shooters never shoot less then 24 x at 300 and Always are up at 40 plus for the 700 - 1000 yard targets and Yes mirage is / can a problem but not always . I shoot a lot on 45 -50 power .
You can always turn down the power of a 10-50 scope but you can’t turn up a max 24 . 😊

I agree with you RJ. The scope was part of PAUL REBINs (SP) estate sale, I'm pretty sure he knew what he was doing. I've got 2 of his rifles a CG 63 6.5x55 Mauser, and a semi custom 10/22 Ruger. Both are outstanding rifles, a friend of mine who introduced me to him has one of his rifles that he used in his Swiss competition shoots.

Not planning on competing. It’s just me vs. myself.
I'm liking my Savage Precision in .308 Win I'm getting very tight groups at 300m with mine. I'm using CAMPRO 147 FMJ loaded on a Dillon 550C while doing it. So it's good ammo but not GREAT match type where I weigh each bullet and powder drop. I just installed my 6-24 Vortex from my .338 LM on it. Definitely dont cheap out on the glass. You can custom tune your ammo, but optics the only way is to replace the unit.

6.5 is a bit much cowbell for 300 yards...but should shoot like a laser beam.

What do you plan on shooting at 300?..... 1.5" groups....3" groups... 6" plates... 12" plates...

That will dictate how carried away a guy ought to get on the ammunition and optics.

Take a look at some ballistics calculators and get a rough idea how much the bullet will drift in 1-10mph winds.

OP indicated being in Ontario, so has a chance of joining the Ontario Rifle Association and participating in 1000 yard events. Winds and mirage can make that interesting even with 6.5 CM. And having a regular practice range as long as possible improves readiness for those events.
