Cleaning off packing "oil" from a new Norinco

Hello all, my most recent JW-15A arrives Monday. The last one, sent back, was coated in what looked and smelled like old deep fryer oil. Normally I would use naptha on the receiver, barrel etc.... no worries as long as the wife puts away her smokes. But what about the synthetic stock? Don't really want to use petroleum products. What do you suggest for cleaning it?

Get Simple Green HD and mixing them in a spray bottle according the Label on there. You can pretty much clean anything even metal or any other plastic surface. Don't forget to oil it back up for the metal gun parts.
 
I used Varsol to clean the cosmoline off my Nor SKS but I don't know about the synth stock. I don't think it would harm it - maybe put a few drops in an obscure place and see if it does anything. Cleaning a 'whole rifle' is an outdoor project using the Varsol.
PS - Varsol didn't harm the French Tickler handguard, which is some sort of plastic.

Wait, You are talking about Varsol paint thinner/cleaner, Jeez. People, you must be wearing mask while cleaning your rifles.

Unless I want to take some crude oil or black things on old milsurp stocks, I wouldn't use those paint thinner/cleaner at all.

For cosomoline on SKS, I simply spray them with some simple green HD mixture then off with hot water spray, everything are coming off like right away. Ballistol is your friend to oil everything up after a hot bath.

Depending on the make up of the synthetic stock, brake clean might be fine...it might also be disastrous. Bear in mind we are talking about Chinese 3rd tier weapons market stuff here. I wouldn't chance it, soap and elbow grease.
 
If it’s just a packing oil and not grease/cosmoline I’d try ballistol or G96 first and then go to varsol if a gun solvent didn’t work well enough. Low odour varsol specifically.
 
Strip the metal off the wood. Spray with citrus engine degreaser spray. Run the parts under the hottest tap water your house has. The heat will dry the water. Then brush with ATF (not the guy, but red automatic transmission fluid) to stop flash rust.
 
Thanks everyone for your opinions and suggestions. I'm a big user of wd40 as well but just not sure about plastic. I think I'll start by setting the stock in the sun for a few minutes to up the goop viscosity, wipe down with shop towels and then go at it with the Dawn dish soap. I'm also intrigued to try the Simple Green HD.... haven't used that before, might be good on other stuff.

That should work fine, I have started using simple green in a spray bottle on old tools as well, it will take off light rust as well.
Brake clean is great, but I would be careful on a plastic stock.
