any one got one had one know anthing about the cal can you get dies?

how did you get the 300gr smks to shoot

what action did you use

Underpowered? not if it runs at 1000fps or less with a suppressor and you use it to shot rabbits ect

im thinking that you will get click splat out to 200-250m :sniper:

How good are 250 grain SMK's running at only 1000 fps? They were intended for 3 times that though. It's out there

I'm not trying to be critical because I think it is cool when people think way outside the box and want to try something different, but its a pretty darned expensive way to shoot rabbits. With a 1000 fps muzzle velocity, you'd have more than a meter of drop at 200 meters.

What the hell.... ...I have a 338-08 and people scoff at that as being a waste of time too, although I love it! build your 338-39 on a sturdy receiver and play for a while and then re-chamber in Lapua Magnum! Now that you've brought up the idea, you HAVE to try it!

Check out the .338 Spectre, sounds like it is about the same ballistically. Although I think it is formed from one of the 10mm pistol cartridges (can't remember which one) it feeds from unaltered AK mags designed for the
7.62x39, and AR mags altered for the 6.8SPC and was designed for the AR platform of rifles. Shoots both the 250 and 300gr SMK at a little over 1000fps

You are talking about flash suppressor, right?

no a sound suppressor i dont live in canada

the 300smk wont work on bid game to well but im thinking if you hit a rabbit with a 300 bullet, its still doing about 900 fps = 530ft lb i dont thing it gunner matter if the bullet expands

had a 338 Lapua Magnum might get another one day or something bigger
what do they call 338- on a 408 ct ?

but im trying to make a good silent gun i can use with night vision and place with large numbers of varmints with out spooking them

One thing to keep in mind about subsonics is the terminal energy is a meaningless number. Just about any decent sized bullet is going to go right through small game as if it weren't even there. The bullet will carry almost as much energy out the back of the varmint as it had entering the varmint.

The only thing that effects the killing power of a subonic is the size of the permanent hole it leaves through the critter. Sharply pointed bullets tend to push flesh aside without causing nearly so much damage. Something with a flat nose or a sharp shoulder will cut and crush tissue on its way through.

Depending on the varmint, a suppressed .22 rimfire is likely your best bet. Otherwise consider a 300 Whisper or subsonic 7.62x39 for a reasonably priced alternative.

A subsonic 300gr 338cal system is going to be horribly expensive and really no more effective than more affordable systems.

I did have the chance to shoot a suppressed 500 Whisper once. With API bullets it was insanely fun. The rifle made a "Phutt" sound and several seconds later the bullet made a "BOOM!" when it detonated on a hard target. TOO COOL!

Because sound suppressors are illegal here in Canada, the whisper cartridges are not as quiet as you might hope, my .300 Whisper is far from quiet even at subsonic speeds. It is deadly accurate, with little or no recoil and without the loud "crack" of a high vel. chambering, but a quiet night time varmint gun it is not.I still need to wear ear protection when shooting it(at paper). I wonder about the advantage of the .338 dia. bullet as the BC is not what a .308 or 7mm bullet is like and efficiency is the key.

I have seen subsonic unsuppressed 300 whisper on a sound meter and it runs about 155 dB which is roughly the same as a 9mm or 45 ACP pistol.

WRT the ballistic coefficient's of subsonic projectiles. The published BC is only valid over a narrow velocity range. The BC changes with velocity and below the speed of sound the measured BC will typically be MUCH higher than the published number.

A bullet like the 300gr 338 has a very large BC and in subsonic mode that will get even larger. Them big heavy bullets don't have any reason to slow down thus they are actually more efficient than the smaller stuff.

From experimentation I'd suggest a medium weight round nose bullet is the best compromise between BC and terminal impact effects.

Large cal RN FP cast bullets would work way better then the MK. That FP puts a big hurt on anything and going subsonic, the increased drag will be of little consequence.

32, 35, 375 and 40 would make great thumpers.
