Best cheap over under

If you dont mind buying used, I would go for a used Baikal. There is a healthy supply in the country, although most are 12 g, check out Intersurplus and others. The latest versions are single trigger, chromed bores, steel rated, with choke tubes. For ~$400 you cant go wrong.

But seriously folks. Find an old Winchester model 101 or citori. They don’t fit/point the same so beware.

Double barrels are like custom sunrooms with built in hot tubs. They are all set up for a specific non-relevant person and they are all stup1d. That’s why I would always recommend anyone who wanted to spend less than 5 grand on a shotgun (or less than 500 even) to buy a pump or semi auto.

It’s sort of like you can walk into Calvin Klein and get a “slim fit” suit that is mostly real wool and looks fitted for 1,000 or you can go to a tailor and have them sew you a fitted suit for 8,000 that will look a little bit better than anything off the rack.

There is a point of diminishing returns on everything

Baikal lists a 20 gauge. My 12 gauge bought in ‘81 for $235 will overlap IVI slugs at 25 yards offhand. I’ve seen “better” not do that.
You cant buy a new baikal though, and while intersurplus lists 159 items when I search "baikal", "baikal 20ga" gets zero hits.

Sadly there is a crapload of cheap used 12ga out there, but far fewer 20ga.

Although with 7/8oz 12ga loads existing is there much difference between 12 and 20?...

Wondering what a good cheaper options for 20 gauge ou is
Are you planning on hunting waterfowl with this or upland?

Watch the weight on some of those cheaper 20ga. Often they just plant 20ga bbls on a 12ga frame and presto you have a heavy 20ga which is no fun at all.

Don't buy cheap. Figure out what you want in a gun and buy that not based on price. Buying cheap will cost more in the long run cuz you'll end up not liking it and selling it off only to buy what you should have bought in the 1st place. BTDT a few times.

In theory, for a given load the pattern ought to be better with the bigger bore gun.

For me, the alure of the 20g would be a lighter/slimmer action. But given the qty of nice British double in the 6lb range available for reasonable $... I went that route. And I can't say I've much of difference knocking birds with 1 1/8oz vs 7/8oz loads... I'm still struggling with the left-to-right shots 🥴

This been said, I still wouldn't mind a nice 20ga... Or a nice 16ga for that matter
