New Flat Land Hunting Rig

If you aren't impressed with the 7mm PRC, why would you do a .280 AI or any similar or lesser case volume 7mm?
If your .300 RUM isn't enough for pretty much anything in NA, you might be SOL.
Just do one that gets you interested again.
I wasn’t impressed with factory ammo aspect of it. That’s all. And it wasn’t the slickest rifle, plane as grass xbolt. It shot alright but I found the velocity wasn’t there, and for how little I liked the rifle itself I wasn’t going to invest in reloading components for it that’s all.

I think I’ve told you before I was really leaning towards the AI. Yes it’s not a speed demon like the hot rodded 25’s I’ve mentioned but it does just genuinely seem like an awesome all around caliber.

Maybe I need to do a hot rodded 25 AND the 280 AI 😬
Hmmm 25 ackley based on 280? Or I guess just a 25-06 improved but way cooler.

Really leaning towards a 280 AI. The more I read up on them and look at load data the more impressed I am.

168gr at 3000fps would do the trick
140gr at 3250fps is pretty impressive
120gr TTSX at 3400+fps is also a laser beam if a guy wanted to go that route.

7mm STW is cool too, but a 168gr at 3000fps needs 80gr of H1000 vs 60gr in the 280 AI to yield same velocity within 50fps.

The thing I don’t like about the 280 ackley is how long it is. You use alot of case capacity up by seating the bullets so deep. That and there’s not much wiggle room for seating depth changes. The wsm, saum and prcw case in a medium or long action open the doors to more possibilities.

OH BOY! OP, you have the fast twist, heavy bullets, trendy, yuppy bug. You're desires appear complex, to me that is. I'm an avocate of the K.I.S.S. theory, in all aspects of life. I'm a fan of velocity flat shooting cartridges, which I have ownership. Some people have mentioned current cartridges to meet you're needs, I echo those sentiments.

Run it in a falling block and your "long action action, long case, bullets set too deep " points all go out the window😁
My Ruger is not hampered by any of those ( as well as magazine length ) and is super accurate .

Some of us need a follow up shot Cat! Lol.

I was wondering if the speeds he posted above were single feeds. They seem a bit higher than I was expecting.

It’s a fact of life for most of us that you can’t keep them all. If you build a 280AI it will likely sell well when rotated out, going too boutique thins your market in a hurry.
My spare rifle on my prairie elk hunt was a mountain ascent in 280 ackley, sold on here in about 5 minutes.

Seconded. Probably my favorite all around 7mm. - dan
My sentimental favorite too; but when I shoot out these last 4 I’m done😂

My pick now is the 7-300 Win. Runs like an STW, magazine friendly, and you’re not married to expensive and or hard to find brass; though an get it if you want or need it. STW used to be the easy way to go fast; its still fast but not so easy anymore😄

7-300 WM is a little short in the case capacity department. Stw wins there. And as you can use pretty much any full length H&H brass to form stw, I don't see that as much hardship. - dan

I’ll never run out of STW brass in this lifetime, but I’ll also never run out of 300 Win brass. When I was talking about expensive and hard to find brass I was thinking more of my 28 Nosler and others of that ilk.
Right now I use the same bullet in my 7-300 and one of my STWs. The shorty 7-300 matches the velocity with 4 grains less if the same powder and 2 inches less barrel. The standard length cartridge in a. Mag length magazine gives freedom to ise practically any high BC bullet and still have a magazine, plus lots of room to chase lands; which would matter more if they ever budged, but after 2000 rounds of what anyone would describe as abuse the Hart barrel refuses to migrate😂
