Hey guys , I just picked up a D , and I noticed that for some reason the bolt wont stay open , I did not see any kind of catch in it to keep it open . With my standard norc sks after the mag is empty the bolt will stay open , but with my D , its always closed. Does anyone elses do this as well? Is it just a D model thing? Any input would be greatly appreciated thank you !

I believe they used to load the last couple rounds of the mag with tracer rounds, so even if the bolt doesn't stay open, the soldier would know when they have ran out of ammo

may i remind you that the "D" was produced strictely for commercial purposes, no soldier was ever issued one.

all reg sks has a bolt hold .

no, "D" is a conversion of a reg sks to accept an AK mag . type 63 is completely a different model .

I also read somewhere that actually when the "D" was manufactured it was just refered to as an sks but it was the retailers that gave it the "D" so that they would have a way to distinguish it from the other sks models!

sounds about right cos my "D" has no model number on it.:(

there were regular fixed mag sks's in the early 90's that were modified/machined to accept a 5 round mag. mag catch was same as fixed model, bolt hold /stop was welded down. these were on the manifest as sks sporter rifles and came with fatter stock and rubber buttpad.

there was also the first D models with the ak style mag release, standard on the d models we see these days. the first batches i saw were on the manifest as sks paratrooper ,came with blade bayonet, 6 30 rnd mags in mag pouch with red star, and 1 5/10 round, sling, oiler, cleaning rod and kit. These also have the threaded to receiver barrels. Most of what i have seen of late are bayo ground off and barrel pinned to receiver. none of these have a bolt catch.

the top descriptions are of SKS-M , they were designed to soften the evil look of the lower descriptions of SKS-D . this softening was good enuff to circumvent the 89 import ban the US had but by 94 , clinton ban norinco all together, all sounds very silly to me.

My SKS-D has a hold open:D

So thats what that is , I was wonderng why it looked so different!

yes, the albanian SKS are the most radical looking among reg SKSs . in addition to the AK type cocking handle , they have a wood stock that goes right up to the front gas block and slightly different looking mag . sure would love to have one of them in my collection.

Ljungman , this bolt carrier is a ##### to drill into , you must have played with carbide or diamond drill bit , right?

SEVEN carbide drill bits actually. It took me days cuse they kept snapping. It was the hardest metal I've ever tried to drill through but it was worth it.

As for the carrier being hard to come by, I put oun an ad here on CGN and had one in about an hour. Looks way better.
