Well I saw this post
http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=210208

and can't get the rifle out of my head. Wish I had the coin right now to buy it, but I don't think it is happening this month.

Does Browning still make these? Can I still buy one new and if so what do they retail for? I can't find them anywhere? I seem to remember seeing them in the WSS catalogue, and my memory is saying $1999. Don't know why I remember that.

Anybody else kick in some info?

The Highwalls were the larger calibers and the lowwalls were the smaller calibers

Well I am damn near convinced to buy one now. I was going to buy a classic Marlin 45-70 this spring, and I was thinking of installing a peep only.

But this seems to be a better plan.

What about pressures? Can they handle semi hot handloads?

hot loads? my dad made a few (very few) that were close to 458 Win Mag levels..that'll shake a few teeth loose!

as far as a steady diet of those.. i dont know. Although Browning did chamber the highwall in 7mm Rem Mag so..

They will take a fair bit more pressure than a Marlin or Winchester Lever action. (~50,000 CUP vs ~40,000 CUP) As mentioned you can load up a 45-70 in the 1885 to "painfull" levels.

Browning 78 45/70

Have a B 78 in 45/70 also. Can easily launch a 400 grainer to 2200 fps with Reloder 7 at the top end and will shoot 1.25 inch as long as you can hang on to it. Curved steel buttplate must be properly positioned or you will regret it. Trigger is adjustable via a visible small screw behind trigger that must be laquered or it works itself loose after 30-40 rounds of the heavier stuff .

Shoots cast as good, and in some cases better than copper bullets especially in the 500 gr. range.
If you have the coin and find one for sale you will not regret buying it.

Winchester made some high wall traditional hunters that you MAY be able to import from the States; I don't know the regs on this. Go to the Winchester guns website, and foolow the "all product lines" ans "non-catalog firearms" links. They have a few rifles built for Davidson's. The trad Hunter was made in .38-55, .45-70, .45-90 and .405 Win. They also have the 1886 Takedown in .45-90.

Uberti also makes a hiwall 45/70 I like the Browning better but you may want to check them out
