Wilson Combat - opinions?

I've handled several of the top of the line pistols and my personal fav is Wilson. Compared side to side with Les Baer or RRA, the detail and finish is far superior and accuracy is as good or better than anything out there.

If you want bang for your buck, go Kimber, they are accurate as hell and a fraction of the cost. I have also fired an STI Ranger that was freakishly accurate.

If you want top of the line go Wilson. I own three Novak customs myself but if I could have only one 1911, it would be a Wilson.

I shoot a 4 inch Smith 9mm revolver better than the Devil himself, it's just the one that works for me.

Find the gun that you shoot the best, have her polished up at a good smith's shop if you don't like the finish and your off to the races.

I am 1911 noob, and I will openly admit it. But, I am coming to really appreciate the platform, and want to aquire a couple of high-end units.
I'm thinking about buying a Wilson Combat Professional.
Thanks!

If you ask me if Wilson makes a good gun, I will say yes! Go for it!
It is among the 4 best semi-custom 1911s.

If you ask me which one I chose...I went with Les Baer! (my second choice would probably be Nighthawk)

If you combine...price, reliability and precision IMHO LB gets it!

My Baer is guaranteed 2 1/2" at 50 yards. You could also get the 1 1/2package.

You said you wanted a couple...get one of each!:)

I have shot and handled several of the "big name" 1911's, when it comes to 1911's from Wilson, Baer, Brown, RRA, Nighthawk etc.... It is had to say one is better then the other, but personally I have never seen the quality and fit and finish like I have in a Novak, when you are up in that price range, you cannot go wrong with any of them, but one big problem is warranty. It is my understanding that Tac-Ord is going to be or already is the warranty centre for Nighthawk in Canada, so if you have to have a $3000 1911 that might be your bet considering if anything happened to it, it could be fixed here under warranty. I have to say, for a good deal it is hard to be that Rock Island Armory that Armseast is selling, all the feature you need for a great combat 1911 but not the fancy name and I am sure it shoot very well as a few have already expressed.

You are correct on Casey at Tactical Ordnance being the warranty center for Nighthawk Custom Firearms, as the owner of a Nighthawk GRP I am extremely happy with the product as received, having owned several of the other high end makers as discussed, it all comes down to preference and what you are willing to spend the money on. That aside I had Target Sports Center order me a Vickers Nighthawk Custom pistol with the Diamond finish, and look forward to shooting it on the range, if anyone in the GTR has a desire to try my Nighthawk drop me aline and I can meet you at Target Sports, all you need is your own factory ammo.

Well for the same dough you can probably get a custom built unit from one of the lesser known but still outstanding 'smiths. Even Dlask in BC's prices are lower than getting some of the customs from the states and those Dlasks are PRETTY! There's a lot of custom smiths around, might be worth a look plus you get to pick some of your own goodies.

Dlask 1911s have been getting mixed reviews on this board. Some owners love theirs while others swear they will never buy anything from Dlask again. If those guns were the equivalent of high-end American 1911s in terms of quality, they would certianly be an outstanding value.

I'd go for a custom from a gunsmith in the states and import it for the amount of money your talking about. That way you get exactly what you want.

Hey Capp, I know what you mean. The word is Dlask makes wonderfully looking things but the reliability is not always 100%. I actually had a Dan Bedell Open gun built in the states, it's certainly as pretty as a Dlask but it seems to work pretty well. Having said that, I'd REALLY like a beautifully blued 1911.

In any event, I do agree with D. Find a 'smith you like and have one custom built!

For a "good" gunsmith you will have to wait 2 years and it will exceed alot the price of a semi!
You can get exactly what you want with "some" semi-custom shops!:)

If I was going to have a "custom" 1911 built, I would have Gunner at ARMCO build it for me, he is a 1911 craftsman. Not only is he here in Canada, but the quality of his work is every bit as good as any of the "big name" smiths in the US and he is just fantastic to deal with.

I have no doubt that ARMCO is a very competent gunsmith, but to say that his work is as good as that of ANY top tier U.S. smith is quite a statement. Not saying this is not the case, but I'm not prepared to accept it at face value without hearing from someone who owns examples of both.

Bit of a moot point. As far as I know, Gunnar isn't building custom pistols anymore.......

I'm basing it on the fact that from the guns I have seen the Wilsons had a slight bit worse fit and finish --

By looking at my Wilson, I really can't see how they could improve the fit and finish on it. The only area that could have been improved upon is the fit between the frame and the speed chute....it's not quite blend properly on the leading/front edge of the speed chute....but it's pretty darn close and not worth nit-picking about.

I got to handle a Wilson Combat Professional at the Calgary gun show. I must say, the fit and finish seemed top notch. I have the cash, but I am really wavering at the price..... it was $2785!!! Is this money well spent for a high end 1911? Or, would I be better off spending $1000 less on a nice single stack STI (Lawman, rangemaster, legacy, etc)?

Also considering the Kimber Super Match II. Cheaper than the Wilson by about $700.
