Um...this is cool. Mossberg 990 Aftershock

I've always kinda disliked these non-stocked shotguns. I don't know why, maybe because someone put a mares leg in my hands once and I thought it was the silliest firearm that I've never hit anything with? I don't recall the caliber but it was a heavy hitting handfull ("hitting"...couldn't hit the barn door if you were inside the barn.). Anyhow, I've seen vids of some kid with a shockwave and mounted laser shooting it from the hip and hits every time, within 7 yards or so, so maybe this has potential once a laser is mounted?

Come to think about it, maybe not, and hear me out. To work the action on a pump gun, both hands are required to chamber, fire, eject. In the event of a ftf or misfeed, clear a stoppage, one racks the action or worst case, mortar tube slams it...but with an auto, that's not the case. One has to reach for the charging handle, and without a stock to tuck under the arm, both hands are close together, pulling on opposite directions with at least half of the gun wagging around, unsupported behind the rear hand. I have visions of trying to cycle that stubborn mares leg lever. It's clumsy as f uck.

we had to stop allowing them in our indoor range.

People were either shooting them from the hip and hitting the target hangers, the floor or ceiling baffles, or other peoples targets. If they tried to look down the receiver & barrel and line up the bead sight, they hurt themselves when that birdshead handle came back under recoil.

I think this kind of stockless setup would be cool with a laser pointer mounted though :)

Apparently a laser is a factory option for it.

To hit stuff with a stockless shotgun requires practice much like everything else skill wise. As for cycling the mares leg, I take it you never watch the terminator movie? Lol it can be done smoothly by some (not me)

I grew up watching Chuck Connors in the Rifleman lol. I think it was a modified Winchester 92 though and just movie stuff (ie blanks). I've also seen video's of Taran shooting a Glock from the hip and he's making those steel plates sing! Wonder how many thousands of hours of practice it takes to get to that level

People (RO's) get skittish when folks start twirling firearms around. I know, I know, open actions can't discharge yada yada...muzzles downrange though.

Ok, I am not out at the range every week end practicing .... and I had maybe 20 shooting sessions in total with my Tac-14 ... and I can do these groups at 50 meters.

So, this is not sorcery ... you just need to know what you are doing ... and understand the limitations of those birds head grip shotguns .... and use the right ammunition.

And I am sure that these sort of groups can be shot with the Mossberg 990 Aftershock ....
Recoil should even be less because it is a semiauto ....

Nice shooting! Are you bracing against the sling when you line up the bead sight? I've heard that's a good technique for mares-leg type lever guns.

One issue I had was that the wood birds head grip was too slippery ... and my hand would slip with each shot and my middle finger got slammed into the trigger guard each time.

That really hurt with each shot! :(

I then installed a piece of bicycle tubing over the grip and that helps and works well with low recoil ammunition.
And I came up with the 3 finger loop concept for my sling ... and which I use when I have to shoot more powerful loads.

Basically the 3 finger loop prevents my hand from sliding forward ... and getting slammed into the trigger guard.

That is all there is to my sling setup.

I'd like one for the short barrel, but would swap the stock for a full sized one. Unfortunately the 14" will be Restricted by barrel length up here, so not for me.
I hadn't heard about the 990 until the other day, but aparently the gas system is different from the 940 and allows use of standard 500/590 butt stocks. Could be a nice option to have, even folders maybe.
