Manufacturing C96 broomhandle hammer

Hey all

I have a beater c96 I want to replace the hammer on

The frame is an antique conehammer, however the "conehammer" is gone and replaced with a spur type hammer.

I am wondering if anybody knows of someone who could replicate the part if I was able to supply one to copy?

I understand it may be a little pricey, but I'll probably have a few extra made to help offset cost.

Any assistance or advice is greatly appreciated!!

Somehow I don't think you do understand just how pricey a custom made, one-of part, that will also need to be heat treated, will be.

Without a technical drawing, you are looking at considerable funds spent to an engineer or industrial designer for a one off part, then paying a machinist or toolmaker to machine the rough part, heat treat, then finish machine and grind, then precision fit the part. I'm not familiar with the internal design of the broomhandle, so I don't know where the sear surfaces are or how how vigorous of a fitting is required.

I would have to assume if you can afford a C96 you can afford the work, but so far as I can see it you’ll need a really talented machinist who’s up for small one off challenges and a really talented gunsmith because without something to work off of, you’d be in a best case making a blank, which would then need to be fitted.

I got a wicked deal on this one, so I am willing to put some money into it. Like I said I would probably have a few extra made to help offset the cost of the drawings exc

Just for argument sake, can the part not be sourced from the states? Imported?

The Northwest part of the Pakistani tribal areas could do it for a song, if someone there doesnt have one already!!

Unless you are making a hundred, then I'd say that making extras will not produce significant savings, sorry. Making 3-4 is still effectively a one off, just some efficiencies along the way.

I've had to replace parts on cone hammers... They are very much hand fitted, and not drop in. There will be hand fitting involved for your gun and for any other guns.

Re: importing the parts - Cone hammers are not very common, so the difficulty is in finding a source, not in the importation.

Anyhow, making one of these is definitely possible but a massive pain. If I recall correctly they were milled _and_ lathed and the switch to ring hammers was largely because of how machine time intensive this one part was...

Also, wait until you see the gun. That gun may very well be original with a spur hammer - there were a lot of variations with the early guns, there are known examples with spur hammers and the spur hammer on the original patent design

If the current hammer functions well, you could manufacture the cone part separately and mill out the top part of the old hammer, and weld the new bit in place, and tidy up the weld.
Fiddly, but less work overall.

Nobody said it couldn't be made. What was said was it would cost a lot of money to have it made .... like way more than anyone would want to pay.

Well then you should make the guy one ... I'm sure he'd be happy to pay you $50 for it. Let us know when its done.

I could 3d scan it and send you the mesh file. A good CNC machinist can probably do CAM from that. Where are you? You can message if you want. For the record, I do it work and the scanner is worth a couple times more than my truck. I could scan it and make it in carbon fibre nylon, but I don't have access to the metal printer yet. I've also never asked. I bet printing it in inconel would work.

I would love to ship it out to you to have it scanned, the issue is it is worth WAAAAAY too much money to risk mailing it. The gun that has the hammer i want to copy is worth about 20 grand... I would need to find someone local with a scanner to do it. After that I would gladly hire you to print out a few

I have made some seemingly complex items with a good set of files, a good vise and some patience. Choosing the correct raw material and heat treatment is the challenge.
