I like that! This is my interpretation of a do-all rifle: pre-war commercial Mauser action in .30/06, Shilen barrel. It's a work-in-progress here; since the pics were taken the checkering and stock finish have been completed. It's away now having the front sight put on. There will be a detachable rear peep that nestles under a trap buttplate. Bluing will likely have to wait till spring, I think I'll run out of time this year.
The choice of .30/06 might seem mundane or cliche, but it shoots flat enough for the plains and mountains, yet you can load it with 200 or 220 gr bullets and it can step up and handle bison and big bears, without obnoxious recoil or rifle weight. There's nothing in North America it can't handle, and very little world wide.

Duck if you want. I’ve got somewhere around 60 Loopies now and have had exacly one warrantty issue. That was a Mark 4 with a fleck floating around in it. It was like that when I bought it usedWith a Leupold, one can understand need for backup irons. Ducking
How much?I looked at a nice BRNO 600 in 30-06 at a gunshow last weekend that would fit that bill. Had the coveted peep sight.
man I love this build, also just the classic mcmillan stocks I have a soft spot for, I wish there was stocks on hand without having to import them constantly.Still in progress but this is my current attempt at my thoughts on the same concept. Pre 64 model 70, McMillan stock, 20” carbon fiber barrel, chambered in 338-06AI.
Comes in at 8.5 pounds scoped
Plenty of thump up close and with the right bullets it has plenty of reach for almost any hunting situation. I find this to be a pretty comfortable weight to pack and with the short barrel it handles well while still being stable enough for precision shooting.

As a general thing if a rifle goes sour I take the scope off. If it has a leupold on it I take the barrel off. No e of my NF have gone bad; but enough of my friends have. That depression thng I me tioned before? They have pills for thatLol, somewhat tongue in cheek, I have leupolds here also, at least 5, do chase zero's around quite a bit season to season, par for course. They don't scare me but I know I'll be 're-zeroing' for comfort, every now and then a zero check goes as planned, it's actually the been the majority of life as majority of life I've run leupolds, don't know much different, apparently there's a better way. I don't mind range days to get all set for the season lol. Will take a couple more seasons before I can say the NF hasn't needed a touch. And it's only been a few leupolds that seemed to be where they should be for a couple few seasons. Seemed to have less adjusts on even the accupoints I ran for awhile 3-9, even old Burris ff2 3-9. Carry on with grail rifle talks.![]()
I really liked my FR8 Mauser. Should never have sold it, but I was rationalizing the gun locker for some reason. It had all the good features of a Mauser, and a rear aperture sight on the bridge. It did it all for me.Project "Piggy" bush gun nearing completion: M48 action and wood + FR8 Cetmeton 308 factory barrel & flash hider, + LE no4 front sight. Rear Norwegian receiver peep sight is coming, so the scout rail, where the old rear sight was
I've got a few that would foot the bill for this one. Modern and traditional.
First is a Tikka T3x Battue with a MaSi scope mount with a Vx-3i 2.5-8x on it. Its dressed in a B&C stock. Mountain Tactical bottom metal and trigger spring. This one could do-it-all in Canada without a doubt.
