Bombproof Do-All Rifle Setup

This is my interpretation of a do-all rifle: pre-war commercial Mauser action in .30/06, Shilen barrel. It's a work-in-progress here; since the pics were taken the checkering and stock finish have been completed. It's away now having the front sight put on. There will be a detachable rear peep that nestles under a trap buttplate. Bluing will likely have to wait till spring, I think I'll run out of time this year.

The choice of .30/06 might seem mundane or cliche, but it shoots flat enough for the plains and mountains, yet you can load it with 200 or 220 gr bullets and it can step up and handle bison and big bears, without obnoxious recoil or rifle weight. There's nothing in North America it can't handle, and very little world wide.

I like that!

With a Leupold, one can understand need for backup irons. Ducking
Duck if you want. I’ve got somewhere around 60 Loopies now and have had exacly one warrantty issue. That was a Mark 4 with a fleck floating around in it. It was like that when I bought it used😂

I have had unused irons fall off the barrel though, or break. The list of scopes I have broken would depress you.

I’ve had lots of Leupold never an issue from plus 30c to minus 50c, same with the few bushnell 3200 I’ve had ! It is really hard to find lightweight scope now a day, everything is like 30mm or more tubes size, big turrets and 3 of them on top of that, heavy bulky and to me to many bells and whistles for my uses!
So Leupold is mostly the last one making good old 1” tube lightweight affordable reliable scope now a day!

A good old 303 has done it all. About as bomb proof as it gets. Not the biggest, fastest, or newest but game under 300 yds won’t know any difference. Pick a calibre you like and run with it. Practice and patience is the name. Moose have fallen to me with 25/06 to mags. Only time I had a problem was with poor bullet out of a 300 win. Sierra 200 bullet pushed fast and moose was close. Bullet came apart and I had to track. My current, and probably my last, hunting rifle is a Ruger in 280. Good luck in finding what will work for you. AJ

Lol, somewhat tongue in cheek, I have leupolds here also, at least 5, do chase zero's around quite a bit season to season, par for course. They don't scare me but I know I'll be 're-zeroing' for comfort, every now and then a zero check goes as planned, it's actually the been the majority of life as majority of life I've run leupolds, don't know much different, apparently there's a better way. I don't mind range days to get all set for the season lol. Will take a couple more seasons before I can say the NF hasn't needed a touch. And it's only been a few leupolds that seemed to be where they should be for a couple few seasons. Seemed to have less adjusts on even the accupoints I ran for awhile 3-9, even old Burris ff2 3-9. Carry on with grail rifle talks. ;)

Still in progress but this is my current attempt at my thoughts on the same concept. Pre 64 model 70, McMillan stock, 20” carbon fiber barrel, chambered in 338-06AI.
Comes in at 8.5 pounds scoped
Plenty of thump up close and with the right bullets it has plenty of reach for almost any hunting situation. I find this to be a pretty comfortable weight to pack and with the short barrel it handles well while still being stable enough for precision shooting.

man I love this build, also just the classic mcmillan stocks I have a soft spot for, I wish there was stocks on hand without having to import them constantly.

As a general thing if a rifle goes sour I take the scope off. If it has a leupold on it I take the barrel off. No e of my NF have gone bad; but enough of my friends have. That depression thng I me tioned before? They have pills for that😂

Wouldn't class it really as a do-all rifle traditionally speaking, However for the weight and the reliability with durability I Love my Q fix in 308.
I have a 18" Proof barrel on the way for it. Keep the shots under 300 yards using good bullets and it works quite fine.
Ive had good luck on moose and elk with 175 terminal ascents or 165cx. all around 320ish yards, no chasing just drops

one photo is with a 2.5-10 NF and the other shows a 2-20 NF, I do prefer the bit of weight savings with the 2-10 personally.

However next build will be a 20" 7prc/7 backcountry or something of the sort, maybe 325 wsm,I do quite miss my short 375 ruger..Future problems for sure.

I really liked my FR8 Mauser. Should never have sold it, but I was rationalizing the gun locker for some reason. It had all the good features of a Mauser, and a rear aperture sight on the bridge. It did it all for me.

When I opened this thread, I was immediately thinking to what I've carried in the field. The FR8 was 7.62x51 NATO, and for a while I had a Garand with a commercial 7.62x51 barrel in a plastic Ramline stock. I had a Remington 74 gas auto in 30-06. That got traded off for a Century Arms 300 Win Mag converted M1917 Enfield. In a plastic B&C stock that did it all for me for many years. When its minor issues bothered me too much, I found a Savage 300 WM with a detachable magazine. Also in a plastic stock and mounting something strong enough and clear enough for prairie deer. No option for iron sights. The consistency is most are a 30 calibre bullet which means excellent options for reloading, bolt actions for cycling, and have synthetic or plastic stocks for abuse and easy cleanup.

I've got a few that would foot the bill for this one. Modern and traditional.

First is a Tikka T3x Battue with a MaSi scope mount with a Vx-3i 2.5-8x on it. Its dressed in a B&C stock. Mountain Tactical bottom metal and trigger spring. This one could do-it-all in Canada without a doubt.

Second is a Winchester model 70 Walnut/Stainless in 6.5 Creedmoor topped with a Swarovski 3.5-10x. This one's pretty rad from the factory but I think I'm gonna turn it into a semi-custom rifle. Change the stock out with a Wildcat, barrel chopped to 20" and add irons to it. Probably change the scope too. As it stands, it's a capable Mountain rifle. But I'd like to modify it to something that I'd like more.

Lastly is a Ruger #1 in 303 British. I have mine topped with a VX-3I 3.5-10x and it fits me like a glove. No modification needed except I should start handloading to tighten up the groups even more.

Lots of different ways to slice this particular pie.

For "bomb-proof do everything" I'd consider a Tikka too, and not really worry about the CRF on that one. Tikka actions have put up ridiculous round counts and its well proven over the years in different variants
