(AR180B)Hi here in Manitoba we have no restriction on Calibre for hunting (just recomendations) this said my question is can I hunt Legally with this rifle? can I have a folding stock? if so would it have to be pinned? With folding stock does it still fall into NR for overall lenght? Magazine would have to be pinned to five correct? of course I Will build appropriate loads! Any scenarios here I am overlooking?
THANKS, Pete...

Yep, you can hunt with it but what?
I'm just assuming that you want to hunt deer/bear with it.

Most hunters would agree that a .30-30 as a min. for deer sized game (yep I know guys will tell you that they've downed moose with one).

I feel that a .223 should only be used for varmits.

Heres a quick low down on bullet speed (fps) & enegry (ft/lbs).

.223
55gr
3240 fps
1282 ft/lbs

7.62x39 Russian
123gr
2365 fps
1527 ft/lbs

.30-30
150gr
2390 fps
1902 ft/lbs

.243
80gr
3350 fps
1993 ft/lbs

My friend has an AR-180b that cracked its receiver right at the hinge. All other Armalite products have lifetime warranties, but the 180b only has a one year warranty. Coincidence? I doubt it.

go for it. don't let anyone tell you that such and such a calibre is too small. the key is shot placement. deer have been brought down with a .22. i've heard of many deer being brought down with 22-250, .223 etc. all you have to do is put the bullet in the right spot.

+1. There is a lotsa deer in a bush with large caliber slugs healed-over in their asses. Overall length and 5 round-maximum magazine capacity still aply to you.

very true, my grandfather brought down a deer with a 22 at a run

All I'm saying is that there are better calibers for hunting big game.
You don't see any countries using .223's for sniper rifles & a human isn't as tough to kill as a deer.:sniper:

I hunt with my No. 5 Jungle Carbine & M14.

well... not completely accurate. They're not as common, but are used for special role applications. Even the humble .22 has a home.

I think you'd have to readdress the criteria under which you call a combatant a sniper. If you're looking for massive range roughly equaling penetration capability -- sure. But FWIW, not all shots are made at 1000y in the middle of a desert.

It might be small, but a .22lr to the toque will ruin your whole day.

maybe u could come up with a better choice.

Lets be honest a 223 is to small for anything larger than a coyote. It is alwasy better to be over gunned than under gunned. Therefor a larger caliber will alwasy do the job better if theshot placement is the same.
Also despite itbeing legal to carry the rifle I'm sure you will get hassles from the cops, rcmp and even other hunters may call them.
Just a thought.

All AR180B lowers are replaced no questions asked if they break regardless of how many owners it has gone through or when it was bought.

Coincidence? I doubt it.

I'm still not a fan of guns that have a tendency for breakage. Another coincidence: they all seem to be made out of plastic.

So are Glocks, large portions of automobiles, helmets, etc. It's designed as a budget rifle. Breakage only seems to happen if you allow the upper to flop open during disassembly, something they tell you not to do right in the manual. As far as other hunters and the police hassling you, have your papers on you and in order and gently tell them to go and procreate with themselves

"....30-30 as a min. for deer sized game..." .243/6mm, but the .223 is too small for deer/bear with most factory ammo.
If your AR180 is longer than 660mm(26"), folded, you're fine. Mag do have to be pinned though.
"A firearm that can fire after being reduced, by folding, telescoping or otherwise, to an overall length of less than 660 mm."
