Hi. I recently acquired an Ithaca 87 and it fired 20 rounds Federal 3" steel and 10 rounds Imperial 2-3/4 lead no problem. Then I fired 1 round of 3" Challenger steel.

The shot fired but I could not get the empty shell to eject by pumping ... also the slide release lever will not release the slide forearm. I need to be able the release the slide to be able to remove the barrel to remove the empty shell that is still in the barrel. Also the safety is stuck in the fire position, Fortunately, I was able to remove the 2 live, unfired rounds.

Suggestions would be appreciated . Thank you !

You can activate the slide release from within the action. If you look you will see a bar blocking the bolt slide from moving rearward. Hold this bar out of the bolt slides way and use a long wood dowel to pop out the fired cartridge. Your gun might not like Challenger cartridges. If the gun has been fired the slide release should be out of the way. I suspect you simply have a stuck cartridge in the chamber.

Thank you ! Using your advice, 20250925_160701.jpg20250925_160713.jpgI got the slide to release and out came the mangled Challenger spent shell. The safety also came unlocked.
