Is a mag tube extension CLAMP required?

Hey Guys;

I don't run a sling or light on my Mossberg 940 Pro Tactical.

That being said, when I purchased the BLOCKED Canadian legal mag tube extension for my Mossberg, I grabbed a mag tube clamp at the same time, thanks bbb at S&J Hardware!

Flash forward to me installing the new spring, extension and clamp... And I realized in hindsight that the mag tube clamp will affect cleaning the shotgun as it will have to be removed each time... Not to mention blue loctite & the rubber pads in between the clamp & barrel and mag tube extension...

So, the question to you gentlemen is, do I need the mag tube clamp on the extension? Can I count on the detent, that holds the short OEM mag tube cap in place, to hold the mag tube extension in place?

Thanks in advance for your insight!

Cheers
Jay

I guess one function is, to keep the tube from unthreading.
Agreed.

Just wondering what folks experience is with the mag tube extension being held in place by the detention which holds the OEM mag tube cap in place...

I don't mind occasionally checking that the mag tube extension to ensure it hasn't loosened off...

I don't think it is an issue, if you google Mossberg 930 mag ext, plenty of pictures of shooters not running a clamp.

Nice rig.

You can run that short mag extension without a clamp no problem...At that length the tube is plenty stiff enough for durability without...I ran that same S&J extension on a 1301 with no clamp and had no issues.

I have a 7 shot Nordic extension on an M2 20 gauge with out a clamp and have never had it loosen or bend...Nordic doesn't even make a 20 gauge size clamp and makes some very long mag extensions which they claim will have no issue sans clamp.

Yeah, I ran an SJ clamp with my SJ tube extension on my Beretta A300UP but it wasn't required. I preferred the look with the clamp and as OkayShooter said already, helps with the tube (potentially) unthreading but I never had that issue when I ran it without the clamp. It certainly does add steps to cleaning for sure. I think it's mostly user preference

Not 940s .... but my 870s have the S&J +2 extensions without a clamp .... and they work just fine like that. I also have one with a +3 extension and to me that would be the limit to run it without a clamp.

+4 extensions or larger ... I would definitely put a mag tube clamp ...

The clamp can cause a massive shift in point of impact, by putting tension on the barrel.

I stopped using one for that reason alone.
I've never had an issue, and have them on several shotguns. They are directional, and aren't intended to be clamped closed. If you're diesel knuckling it down, or have the mag end on the barrel, I guess it could deform the barrel? Good luck stressing something like a 590A1 barrel though. ;)

I like the clamps for the added rigidity and appearance, but hate them for cleaning and shifting either the barrel or mag tube. Tomato potato.

On a solid extension (eg S&J), I would say that a clamp is not required (unless you wanted to be that guy rocking a bayonet LOL).

On the old factory Rem 870 two-piece style of extension, the clamp must be used together for it to be stable.

As mentioned above: If your 1 piece extension utilizes the shotguns mag cap detent, you don’t need a clamp.
If you run a 2 piece extension (like a rem 870 factory ext) the tube itself doesn’t interact with the detent, so a clamp should probably be used to ensure the tube doesn’t rotate loose under firing. Not a 100% requirement tho, there are always work arounds..
