Crown Damage - 1895 SBL Ruger

Hey guys,

Two possibilities. I took a tumble while hunting or it got damaged shipping to QC for warranty by the included cable lock.

Probably the latter because the plastic covery the cable had been stripped away when I got it back. Vibration maybe? Who knows - won't make that mistake again.

Is this worth fixing? You can only see if it you look for it and it catches the light. But I can catch a fingernail on the larger one for sure.

I shoot these with ghost rings so groups aren't tight anyway. But it kinda bothers me. Reassurance maybe?

I don't see anything significant that would affect accuracy there. The crown angle is consistent all around, could be polished up a bit better, but I don't see any actual damage.
 
I believe I can see what you are talking about. They are on the outer edge of the crown well away from the bore and I wouldn't think they would affect accuracy. Those tiny burrs could be easily cleaned up.
 
Is that what you're worried about...? If so, no effect on accuracy whatsoever, the bullet will never even come close to making contact wit that part of the crown.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts. Its precision at 100m is limited by the me using the ghost ring and not the gun at all.

I won't worry about it then and maybe just get it cleaned up when I am bored with free time.

I don't see that as an issue at all, as stated the bullet will never contact that edge. If you want reassurance, slap a scope on...easily done on an SBL...and test fire. Your confidence will be restored, and you'll see what the gun can do and how much practice you need with the aperture sight. :)

How exactly could a cable lock do this? Is there some weird cable lock that runs down through the barrel and out the muzzle? Cable locks typically go in through the loading port and out through the magwell, or the bolt raceway with the bolt removed, and I've seen some applied on levers questionably wrapped around the grip and through the lever. What kind of trigger lock is anywhere near the muzzle?

Yes, that's exactly what it is. The marlin comes with an unusual cable lock that has a ball on one end, and a lock at the other. You are supposed to thread it down the barrel and out the feed port, or vice versa:

Mine arrived, shipped by canada post, with the cable lock packaged separately! The gun itself was shipped unlocked. When I went to use the lock, I was just as confused as you and I had to dig around the internet for a bit to figure it out. When I did, I decided I didn't want to bother with that ridiculousness and I just went out and bought a regular cable lock.

Thanks for the explanation. I was expecting somebody to ask me what I was smoking when I suggested that based upon the OP's original description. In your pic it looks like the thing is barely long enough to lock together, and that's on the fairly short-barrelled SBL; so they must have different lengths of cable lock for different barrel lengths? Yikes; imagine one for a long-barrelled cowboy gun. :oops:

No worries. I should clarify though, the ends do not lock together. The ball is at one end, and the lock just clicks onto the other end, so then the cable is not able to be pulled through from either direction. I mean, it's not a bad idea in theory. It certainly prevents the gun from being fired. But it's just awkward as all get out and I just didn't like the idea of having to shove a cable down the barrel all the time.

I have the kit for my 308 and 22 rifles and ordered it many years ago through Brownells.
