i made a cam lobe for my ruger 44 mag. the action had a ramp in the receiver but no lobe on the bolt.
this was fine for pistol ammo . i don,t own a 44 mag handgun and don,t plan on ever getting one. so
all my 44 mag cases have been reamed to use large rifle primers to take rifle pressures. i shoot my 240 grain
bullets at 444 marlin velocitys with less recoil. with this increased pressure. it was hard to to extrack the case.
the pictures tell the rest of the story. this was made useing $500 a pound trick welding rod. oh, i also extended
the bolt handle for scope use.

Did a quick search. .44Mag max pressure is 43500cup; .444 Marlin is 44000cup. Darn near the same. .44Mag uses magnum large pistol primers, .444Marlin uses standard large rifle. You deepened the primer pocket in your .44Mag brass. What is the web thickness like in your altered cases?
If you were experiencing hard extraction with your .44Mag loads, it suggests you are exceeding factory .44Mag pressures - which are already right up there.
The rework you did on the root of your bolt handle to enhance primary extraction camming is not unlike the adjustments sometimes made to Remington 700 bolts for the same reason. Don't tell the folks at Ruger you were welding on the bolt. I am assuming that the rod you used was compatible with the alloy used in manufacturing the bolt, and that steps were taken to guarantee that no heat reached the locking lugs.

For 65 years I have been under the assumption large pistol and large rifle primers had the same physical size with the rifle primer having a hotter charge and a thicker cup to withstand higher pressures. They will fit interchangably without altering the brass. ?

small pistol and small rifle are identical in size with thicker cup material on the rifle.
the large pistol and large rifle identical OD but the large rifle is 6 thou thicker. u have to deepen
the primer pocket to be able to install flush. Sinclare makes a nice carbide primer pocket cleaner
with built in depth stop.

with this increased pressure. it was hard to to extrack the case.
no spit .....

Hodgdon data shows 44 mag rifle loads to 38,000cup while 444 shows to 42,000 max for each
yet the 44 mag rifle shows using a LP primer, not even a LMP, likely for reliable loads that feed/extract prperly
j, I don't even want to know what your loads are like

with the sammi specs max load , my rifle clocked the 240 gr bullet at 1700 fps
now with the same bullet i clock at , can,t remember if it,s 2200 or 2300 fps.
u would not want to put these in hand gun. while your looking at the h110 powder loads,
u notice the starting and max is only a few grains. i know of 2 ruger 44 mag hand guns that
ruptured the cylinder because of a reduced starting load and with this paticular powder
it can cause detenation instead of a burn.

1700fps to 2200fps. You have achieved a 29% increase in velocity. That is a rather remarkable achievement!
