Remington 597 Magazine options

I have an 'old' 597 that reliably shoots... so long as a cartridge gets into the chamber. It came with the stock metal 10rd magazine as well as a plastic ?ProMag 20?

The extractor has been upgraded along with the hammer and spring. The issue of magazine feeding remains. The stock magazine was improved quite a bit with an aftermarket spring that had more pressure. I wouldn't say it's solved, but it's not going in the garbage. Has anyone found other alternatives than the ProMag? It's terrible! I am inclined to throw the ProMag out, it's so bad. Since Remarms isn't making the 597 anymore I wonder if anyone has had luck adapting another magazine to the 597 since almost all of my problems are actually inside the magazines.

I have a 597 and was not able to get any of the 10 round mags. So I have 3 Promags and an original hi cap Remington mags. I have no issues with any of them. I’d love to get my hands on a couple 10 rounders but no luck to date. Mine is the VTR model.

I have factory tens and they work fine

I owned two pro mags, absolutely garbage, one would only load like a dozen rounds. Promag doesn’t understand geometry, just slap a spring in a box and send it.

The factory Remington plastic high cap mags are getting tough to find

To the points made here, mine are the same.
My 10’s work well. All of them.
My promag is hard to get reliable results and my rem mag isnt perfect but it is better than the pro by a mile.
Is your follower possibly catching a burr?
Also just curious if youve tried higher vs lower velocity through the mag?

Malfire,What bur could the follower catch? I would like to look at that.

I've tried Federal blue box. Also, CCI mini mag, target, blazer. No subsonic, but HP and target to see if there is a difference there. I bought a couple more different boxes but haven't been able to get out again so far.
Try rotating the magazine spring. I had issues with mine after cleaning one time and that did the trtrick.
Moose, I had bought an upgraded spring that was being used in a separate magazine, but I put it back in the factory 10rd, in the direction that seems to give more pressure on the leading edge of the bullet. While it was apart I sprayed some graphite inside the magazine.
In the garage, with aluminum blanks, cycling by hand is almost flawless but I need to get out to somewhere to shoot so I can see how actual ammo feeds at higher speeds of real shooting.

I see that in the UK it's possible to buy metal reproduction factory magazines that supposedly feed as well as the authentic Gen4 from Rem, but more heavy duty.

So far I've tried:
CCI mini mag 40gr target 1235fps
CCI stinger 32gr Varmint 1640fps
CCI mini mag 36gr Varmint 1260fps
Federal blue box 36gr HP 1280fps

I picked up these but haven't shot them yet:
CCI Blazer 40gr no specs on the box
Aguila 38gr HP 1280fps

I have two of the promag mags and so far have not had any issue with them
Bert, what ammo do you use? Do the promags fit fairly snug in the mag well?

The one I have is quite loose and I've even tried holding tension in all directions to see if that made a difference (left, right, front, back, up, down). Unfortunately nothing helped.

Mostly bulk ammo. Mine fits snug but has an aftermarket Archangel stock so it's different than yours.
On top of that I also made a completely different "custom" mag release for it as the factory mag release was hard to reach in the Archangel stock.

I have some good news to report! On the weekend I was able to get out to some private property and test the 597 and actually had repeated full-magazine dumps without issue. It's taken a number of iterations to get to this point.

Failure to Extract - stock extractor had a bad bur and edges were not crisp. Initially I used a fine diamond stone to remove the burs and define the edges. This made a world of difference. It probably would have been fine but I replaced the extractor with Volquartsen part for good measure and extraction is never the issue now.

Failure to Fire - this was nowhere near as common as the others, but I polished the rods, sanded and polished the bolt surface that touches the hammer, and used dry graphite on the sliding parts before assembly.

Failure to Feed - I thought this was the main issue when first looking at the rifle. I tried both Promag 22 and factory gen 4 10rd magazine. Then a friend gave me a custom plastic magazine. I bought the M-Carbo magazine spring and that did seem to help reduce the cartridges from stopping in the magazine. Polishing the inside of the metal case slightly and adding dry lubricant also made a significant difference. There certainly does seem to be a difference in function depending on the orientation of the spring. The 'higher pressure' side of the spring needs to face forward, toward the barrel. The action also needed to cycle faster to not give fresh rounds time to stand on end in the magazine. Using 1235-1640 fps ammo certainly seemed to improve this issue.

Failure to Eject - Related to above, the ejection was kind of pathetic looking back now. Using 1235-1640 fps rounds of various models and manufacture, combined with polished and lubed rods cycled fast enough to really start throwing the cases with zest. The final piece was actually backing off the setscrews behind the rods completely. I had a hint of tension before, but backed them off at least 1/8 of a turn from touching which felt completely wrong, but it worked.

I was able to shoot more rounds effortlessly this weekend than I have the rest of the time owning this thing combined. Many times I took the other 22LR but NOT the 597 because it caused me nothing but frustration. In fact, I tried it one evening last week when I was out mainly to test some hand loads in a centerfire and thought I would give it one more chance will almost everything above done. It wouldn't feed a single round. It wouldn't even single load from the magazine. I shot it a few times by manually starting the cartridge into the chamber. I was about to literally throw it out, as I couldn't even imagine selling it to another poor soul like that. 5 minutes before heading out on the weekend trip I decided to try one more thing so I pulled the action and back off the setscrews ever so slightly and pray for the best... it worked. I don't believe for a moment the setscrew pressure on the rods was the only culprit, but without that and all the other issues sorted together there was little hope of success.

Now I'm so glad that we gave it one more shot, as it's a very fun rifle to shoot (even as fast as I can pull the trigger if I like). That actually makes it even more disappointing that I'm not able to find extra magazines now. BTW, with all the improvements on the action, the ProMag 22 still doesn't work at all. Now the 10rd works flawlessly and the 22rd may get cut up to harvest the spring.

I was even tempted to try making a new magazine by machining two halves from metal but reproducing the little internal feed ramps/lips seemed really fussy and awkward with the manual equipment I have (and lack of skills). So I'm still looking for magazines that are factory original, reproduction or aftermarket so long as they actually work.

My experience with the pro mags are positive. Could it be that you have a defective one?
It could be. I don't think i want to try another one but I might have no choice as there don't seem to be any other options unless a make something from scratch.
