Just got some interesting provenance on this Webley WG.
According to the sales records it was 'destroyed in a fire' in a warehouse in Bombay and never sold. Yet here it is.
Looks like fire was still the preferred way to 'account' for stolen guns even in 1896.
The sales books list it as having a sales price of £5.12.0. However, under the ‘Name of Purchaser’ column, staff have written ‘probably destroyed by fire’; in the next column the date ‘11.3.96’; and under the ‘Remarks’ column ‘Bombay ‘Peninsular’ 1/11/95’. This all suggests that revolvers [serial range] were sent to the Mumbai branch of the Army & Navy CSL on board the ship Peninsular on 1st November 1895. A few months later there was a fire at the Mumbai branch on 11th March 1896, which may have destroyed these guns.
Some pictures (shame about what was done to the left grip)
