I'm trying to talk myself out of some spring bear next year. So far without much success.
My EXISTING bear catcher of choice would be my HVA 1640 in 9.3x62. However, I'm considering building something in the same caliber over the winter for a spot of hobby and, perhaps most importantly, as many
and
as can be had. Therefore, I wanted to run the idea by the hivemind.
Steppe the firste, is to take a HVA 1640 in 9.3x62 in roughish-shape (wallered out stock, maybe a beat up crown on the barrel) and shorten the barrel to circa-about 20". Maybe even 19". Question the firste is: where do you measure barrel length from - the lands, or the head end of the chamber?
Steppe the seconde, is to remount the barreled action in a laminate stock (some are available that fit with a slight bit of zip-zip with the dremmel. I would definitely glass bed it.
Steppe the seconde redux, is to buy a lighter chassis or to bodge together some aftermarket components (stock, foregrip) with a home-made milled aluminum chassis main. Questionne the seconde, is whether there are any available chassississississes for a HVA action?
Steppe the thirde, will be to machine a rail for this action (or buy one, but that costs an arm, a leg and some other appendages).
Steppe the fourth, would be to mount a 1-6 LPVO scope. Suggestions of inexpensive but decent ones welcome.
Steppe the fifth, the boom-boom fodder. I would like to develop a load for this that would maintain the ca. 2300 fps muzzle velocity in the shorter barrel, with the same 286 grainer I already have. The load I'm working on for the existing rifle is 286 gr PPU SPs over Varget (I have both), but I'm open to better suggestions as well. Happy to invest in a pound of something else.
Have at 'er, boys! Positive, negative and bi###ual comments all welcome.
