Just brought home a Ruger made Marlin 1894 SBL in 357 that serve as my main range rifle and do some occasional critter management around the farm. Took it out to the range today, and was able to shoot the bullseye out of a target with the standard ghost ring sight at 25 yards - so I’m loving it so far!

I’m still thinking of getting an optic for the rifle. My Tikka T3X in .223 is scoped with a Swarovski 3-10x42 and has worked great for managing coyotes around the farm. So I have a longer range (for me, haha) rifle setup that I’m happy with.

The range I’m a member at maxes out at 50 yards, and given the 357/38 spl calibre I don’t imagine taking shots at any pests much over 100 yards around the farm.

Given those use cases, I’ve narrowed down my optics options to a few choices:

LPVO

Trijicon 1-4 Ascent or Huron w/Leupold QRW2 30mm low rings

Red Dot

Aimpoint 9000 SC w/Leupold QRW2 30mm low rings

Trijicon RMR Type 2 w/Browe Mini Ultra Low Mount

I’m leaning towards the Aimpoint 9000 SC at the moment, mostly for the aesthetics if I’m being honest.

Haven’t totally ruled out a Scout Scope type setup as a third option. Let me know if there’s anything else I should check out.

Appreciate any advice you can offer!

Cheers,

Dave

If your eyes are good and you like the ghost ring sights you probably won't see much advantage with a red dot other then maybe low light performance.

A compact LPVO with quick detach rings would help you see smaller targets better out to 100 yards and still be quick at 1X

Great feedback - thank you! Do you have a preferred LPVO I should check out as an alternative to the Trijicon Huron 1-4?

Stick with the original XS sights on the SBL.
If anything, get the smaller aperture.

Get the 0.150 for the SBL. Think original it comes with is 0.191

Amazing - didn’t know they made the ghost rings in other sizes! I have a Skinner peep on my BL-22, so I knew I could get different aperture sites to thread in - so great to know I can play around with ring size. Thank you!

Not really, there are lots of good options in the price range of the Huron. I'm not familiar with the Huron so I just took a look and was surprised it didn't have illumination, you can probably find a 1-6 with illumination in the same weight range. Then you have to pick a reticle.... :)
