Interesting Question on 22LR Ammo

Howdy fellas.

Question,

I bought a 525 round box of Federal Champion hollow point high velocity ammo.

Well the other day I decided to take my brother with me for the first time and sight in a scope on my 10/22 and do some target shooting. But something strange with this ammo....

This stuff is pretty loud when fired compared to other stuff I have used, but I noticed that 1 in every 5 or so rounds were noticeably quieter then the last round.

What would cause this? my first thought was that some casings had less gun powder then what should have been in there?

Anyone else have a Ruger 10/22 and use this stuff? it also doesnt eject to well eather but maybe that is my extractor.
 
the bolt is probably opening before the bullet has completely exited the muzzle. Shoot it in the evening when it starts to get a bit darker out; you'll probably see 'fire' coming out of the action for the 'loud' shots.

This ammo is behaving the same way as the brick of Remington pack of 525 I bought, also same way as the winchester xpert 22 I bought.

Do not worry , it is not your gun, lattely those value pack bricks, are manufactured cheaplly.

If that were the case, what would be the case of that? I have had the trigger group all apart and everything looked great, had a good cleaning as well.

I was tending to think along these lines, cheaply manufactured.. It kind of freaks me out.. because it usually goes "BANG" like a 22 HV round should sound, and every odd round or so it will be a dampened THUD sound. Hmm, wish I could get my money back on this #### then. :mad:
 
This is only what the guy at WSS told me, so take it for what it is. But he said in the bulk packs the rounds get banged around alot, this causes some rounds to compress. I also had a 10/22 and he recommended against the bulk packs for that or any other semi, and the inconsistant overall lengths will cause problems feeding. Of course another guy working there who had a 10/22 told me he buys them all the time, his only problem with them is they misfire more often. I didn't buy the bulk pack, nor have I fired my 10/22 yet, so all of this is just what I've been told, not my personal experience.
 
"...doesnt eject too well either..." It's not likely to be your ejector. Not all .22 ammo works well out of all .22 firearms. Even two consecutively serial numbered firearms will shoot the same ammo differently. You have to try a box of as many brands as you can to find the ammo that both shoots well and cycles the action.

Guess I will go buy something new to try. Your right, I just got this 10/22 and that is the first ammo I have ran through it, so maybe I will try Dynapoints next, if I can even find them. Not much of a selection at chinamart or cambodian tire :(

If they cause problems for semi-auto's, what do they do for inconsistent accuracy in bolt actions?
 
In my experience its just shoddy manufacturing. I put about 100rds from a 525rd bulk pack over the chrono last summer and it was about on par with your experience; every 5th or so shot was noticeable quieter and 100-150fps slower.

Poor tolerances in the factory I guess, but still decent for plinking around, however I don't get extracting issues as much.
 
Here's some of the data I compiled on a few more expensive brands (never did record any of the bulk pack data...). To my surprise, the CCI was the least consistent round. But, ymmv.

The most likely reason is that some bullets are dropping below the speed of sound, while the rest are supersonic. A bullet that goes supersonic sounds a lot louder than one that is not, even if the difference in velocity is trivial.

The truth is that they are made cheaper and they are cheaper.

Probably not the case. If it were the shooter would feel the blow back. They all belch fire in the dark.
 
I buy these exact boxes of Federal for my Ruger Mk I and they perform flawlessly - I have yet to have one fail. Stocking up!
 
Thanks for all your input.

I will get out once this snow is melted and do some serious testing and see what is up. I just think it is a bad batch of ammo. Wont be buying Federal anymore ;)

I had lots of luck with the Dynapoints in my Marlin 60, never notta 1 stovepipe or thud.
 
I noticed that today, thought I was hearing things. It was a lever gun, so no weird bolt problems to deal with. Every 5 to 10 rounds sounded noticeably quieter. For plinking though, I'll still use it. My Anschutz likes it, and the others are ok with it. No feed/function problems with it in the 2 bricks I've shot through.
