3 position safety/locking bolt mod for a rem 700

I have a left handed stainless rem 700 long action I want to build into a 280AI, but I am wondering if it can be modified so that when the safety is on, it locks the bolt closed, so it wont open when walking through the bush.

Has anyone done this?
 
Quite a few $ for that feature.

Brownell's at one time had an add on safety for a factory trigger that allowed locking and unlocking the bolt when loaded. I used one a long time ago. It was a little tricky but worked. When the safety was engaged, to open the bolt and leave the safety engaged you pushed down on the safety lever and while holding down, lift the bolt...

Eventually I found I did not really need a bolt that locked down. Never had a problem while hunting in bush. One would have to be pretty rough and a bit careless...

Non locking bolt is probably the one thing that bugs me about R700
 
OP,
The Ed LaPour/PT&G swing safety firing pin & shroud does NOT operate akin to a Win 70 or Mauser.
The firing pin requires milling.
The striker/cocking piece shout be replaced w/ a 45 degree cross pin hole striker/cocking piece.
The bolt body/handle would require an 1/8" longitudinal hole to facilitate the lock feature.
A Remington is #### on open & #### on closed.

Have the bolt body milled( a slot) for an OEM Rem bolt lock safety lever.

You can get a kit from PT&G that includes a new firing pin. If you just get the new bolt shroud and safety, you'll have to do a bit of milling on your stock pin assembly to make everything work. The kit with everything from PT&G is about $450 shipped Canadian if I recall. It also only comes bare stainless, so if your rifle is blued or coated, you'll have to do that as well. Lastly, you'll have a gap beside your tang when you remove the safety lever off the trigger. Easy to deal with, but unsightly if you leave it that way.

I have a 700 AWR I plan to mod this way - just waiting for the parts. It's probably a waste of time and money, but I like tinkering and I HATE that the bolt isn't locked on down. I've left more than one round on the forest floor when my coat or a twig opened that action while carrying.

A guy could just buy a Kimber or a Winchester right off the hop and save the hassles.

Can you send me a link or something to look this up? Ive never seen an OEM bolt lock safety lever before

Well.... my issue is I need it all for a left handed rifle. A winchester mod 70 left handed action is about as rare as can be and more expensive than a custom action. But I cant be motivated to spend the money on a custom action for a rifle that gets hunted with 10 days a year...
 
The original Walker triggers had two position safeties. Safe with bolt locked and fire with bolt unlocked. The bolt locking feature was deleted so that the rifle could be unloaded with the safety on.

I'm not sure if PT&G makes a left-handed kit. In any case, I agree, if the rifle is getting used regularly then it's worth a bit of extra cash to set it up just the way you like it.
 
OP,
The simplest & least expensive option would be to chamber a round & trip the trigger w/ your ring finger while you rotate the bolt into battery.

When needed, rotate the bolt out of battery, pull to the rear approximately 3/16" of an inch, push forward & rotate the bolt back into battery.

90% theory will respond that the option is dangerous w/a live round in the chamber.

I have won hundreds & hundreds of dollars proving people wrong that said Remington 700's will go bang if the firing pin/shroud is hit in any way/shape/or form.....it will NOT go bang being de-cocked w/a round in the chamber.
 
it's difficult enough to reach the release tab to get the bolt out of a 700 let alone have one fall out
actually it is impossible to have a bolt fall out
 
Would like to know anyone in the USA that can do this on a 700 bdl left hand. Gonna rebarrel. It is the biggest pia for my type of hunting. That bolt continuously opens. Gonna rebarell 35 whelen only if can get Dam bolt to lock .

I’ve got to ask. How are you carrying the rifle or what are you doing with it to have the bolt opening be an issue? I have put on literally thousands of miles with a rifle on my shoulder and never once had the bolt get knocked open, through all kinds of terrain.
