hi i am interested in shooting 308 milsurps please i dont want to here about how good 303/8mm is it is simple ammo logistics i have seen in brownells advertized military contour barrels for m98 in 308, has anyone on here converted there k98's to 308 and still kept the military look?

and whats the story on the israeli 308's are they of good quality and maintain decent acuracey?

i have also seen converted enfields to 308 haow common are they i am not talking about the AIA's

Neil, my first rifle was a converted Israeli K98 mauser. It shot great.

Seen lots of Lee Enfields from .303 to .308 but those don't go for cheaps.

Not that its going to help I have an old mystery Brazilian Mauser in .308

Its been sporterized sadly but Ive had it as long as I can remember (it was my fathers) and its still one of my best guns. Uncountable rounds down the pipe and still bang on. I love that gun.

Those neat little Brazilian carbines, with the flash hiders and H&K rear sights, are great little rifles.

The Brazilians had a very unique way of converting them by the way. They just took one of their 30-06 chambered barrels and cut the chamber end to length and rechamber to 7.62x51, excludeing the bbl/receiver shoulder.

It was a bit scarey for me the first time I shot one, but it was quite accurate and comfortable to shoot.

The stocks are obviously cut down and refurbed standard styles with a new handgaurd, then varnish the whole thing liberally.

There are the odd Brazilians converted to 7.62x51 out there as well as some chambered for 30-06 and 7x57. They are all good.

That would be the one! So its supposed to look like that? Shows what I know.

Very nice gun, I'd buy another if the opportunity presented itself.

'98 Mauser doesn't need a barrel shoulder to breech up. The barrel face contacts the inner receiver collar. Shot a caribou with a Brazilian M968 7.62.
Chile also converted Mausers to 7.62, as did Spain.
There are also the aftermarket .308 military profile barrel as jcbruno has mentionned. Getting one will require going through the paperwork. Less expensive to buy one of the military surplus ones.

what paper work is involved is that do to the CFO ?
i found a israeili k98 for sale i may just do that anyway,
what is the quality of steel in the israeili m98's, i guess i worry about pressure's with modern ammo

Most gunsmiths and barrel makers can contour a barrel to copy whatever contour you're replacing. Mausers are a fine action and I don't see why you couldn't put an aftermarket/custom barrel on there and preserve the look and improve accuracy on any of them. I think you could convert to any caliber that the bolt face supports. Indexing and installing the sights is the tougher part.

The Israeli M98ks are either Czech, German or Belgian (FN) production and are fine as far as metallurgy and strength of the 98 action. IIRC some of the FN contract rifles came from the factory in 7.62 and where not conversion rifles.

They should be safe with modern .308 loads, though they were designed to work with 7.62 pressures. While I suspect that the .308 loads might lessen the rifle's service life over the long term (i.e. increasing headspace), you would probably have to shoot alot of ammo before that happens.

There has been much discussion about the potentially negative effects of shooting full power .308 loads in Ishapore No2 Enfields, Spanish FR7 carbines, Spanish 1916 Short Rifles and possibly in the FR8, which however uses a 98 type action and a barrel designed for 7.62 NATO. While it probably does not hurt the FR8, some gunsmiths have suggested that it does not take much commercial .308 to ruin the headspace on the Ishapore Enfields and perhaps some of the older Spanish rifles.

I own an Israeli Mauser and it shot commercial .308 fine. Surplus NATO or commercial FMJ ammo (Win White Box etc) might be a better idea if planning to regularly target shoot with the rifle, while leaving the SP ammo for sighting in and hunting. Barring those in poor condition, everyone I've heard of who's purchased an Israeli Mauser were happy with them.

Order a barrel from Brownells, and you will find out about the paperwork. I was referring to the export from the US situation.

I was considering the same thing because a nice milsurp with cheap modern 7.62 surplus ammo is a nice combo. My first choice would be the Isreali mauser but
the Spanish FR8 or even an FR7 is a good second choice and could be easier to find. They are safe for military surplus but it would probably be safer to stay away from commercial .308. Since the main attraction of the gun is cheap 7.62 this is not a real hardship. Some people do shoot .308 in them but they were not rated for it.
