my wife asked me why at my age do i hunt alone??, so my question is why do others hun

When I was young I hunted with a great bunch of guys. As we got older for one reason or another life got in the way. I made sure I hunted with my Son and Daughter but sadly they grew up and moved away. I started hunting solo in my 50's and really enjoyed the solitude and the challange of planning the day and being safe.
I leave a detailed plan with the wife and I carry a zoleo. The zoleo will at least provide the familly with a body and closure. I am 70 now. If I have the big one in the bush I am ok with that.

I am 70 and find that dragging a deer almost any distance is not fun anymore. So I build a nice warm blind found a place to put it and just stay there over night till it happens. I like to wake up where I hunt as apposed to driving some where. I have known distances around it and don't take shots past them. I want DRT. Being out by my self is just soothing looking listening and enjoying the quite. Got a nice little buck on Saturday had a cup of coffee loaded him up and went home. A great weekend. May not be the way some people like to hunt but I did my time walking and dragging.

What a neat little mobile hunting shack! Did you follow some kind of plans, or every cut just got you closer to the end? Be nice to see a little write up for those of us "less handy" in the carpentry department.
No plans Red Green would be proud. I bought a 6 x 6.5 ' trailer and just framed up the walls and roof and screwed it all together.What a neat little mobile hunting shack! I love it! I'm just a year younger than you but I definitely feel the difference when bringing deer out of the bush, compared to doing the same thing when I was younger. I hunt on my own land, have a few more-or-less permanent blind set-ups, and I find that each year I spend less time still-hunting, less time hunting on nearby properties where I have permission and more time in my main blind at home, which is essentially a wooden box constructed on top of an elevated platform.
Even there, it's getting harder and harder to retrieve deer. Last year we had no snow when I shot my buck...the first major dump happened the day after I shot mine...and I ended up dragging a big-bodied buck in my ice-fishing sled through a rough, dry pasture for probably 1.5 kilometers on a circuitous route back to the house. It was gutted, and legs cut off to reduce weight, but still...I was monitoring my heart rate the whole time and flirting with disaster. The first two pulls were probably 80 yrds or so at a time, before I had to stop to breathe and rest. By the time I got to the house, 30 or 40 feet at time was just about killing me.
Not planning on shooting them that far from the house, or at least from a smooth trail, ever again.
I would like to join the 70 plus club….
Went from being athlete of the year to a semi-cripple from an encounter with mosquito carrying the West Nile virus about 7 years ago….sucks, then a heart attack one day before going on a solo deer hunt.
I have a permit now to shoot from my vehicle which multifunctions as a motel/atv/blind.
Climbing tree stands is history, shooting and dragging out a deer would require planning and help but now the odds are in favour of me passing up on a shot. Hunting squirrels now, dragging them out is much easier… lol
Mr. Pounder’s mobile trailer hunt blind with cooking facilities and heater is a class act. Im a wee bit jealous but inspired !!

I don’t actually hunt alone, honey. I just tell you that I like to hunt alone …so you don’t invite yourself along …you wanted the truth ….there ya have it …
For close to 40 years I hunted with my group the first week then when they left I would have the second week by myself, I enjoy being with my buddies and sons but I was so at peace with nobody around.
Had some major health issues starting about ten years ago and there was no way my sons would leave me alone to hunt in peace haha.
Then it happened, two years ago for different reasons everyone had to leave for the day on the second Saturday. For the previous three days I had been watching a mid-sized buck totally exerting his dominance at my stand area.
At 10 a.m. my youngest son called to check on me, "hold on a minute" said I.
BANG! flop.
When I picked the phone back up my kid was laughing, he knew I had been waiting to be alone before shooting.
Probably smarter to have shot when the guys were around but I had to prove to myself that I still had a bit of toughness left inside of me. From the time I shot I had it out of the woods (ATV and trailer) hung and cleaned within two hours , and supper ready for the boys when they got back from town.
The memory still makes me smile.
