I'm seeing some M1 Garand's chambered in .308 for sale by Canadian retailers. Would these have been modified?

I have a Breda chambered in .308. It was built this way because Italy had the tooling from Winchester. They would later go on to make the BM59.

There are dozens of thread standards. UNF, UNC, letter, numbered, instrument grades etc. and all are not interchangeable.
64TPI is the pitch. Nominal diameter and shape standard... I cannot find the rest of the information to get a tap&die set. It's like asking the size of a room and only giving someone the ceilling height,
