Youth 20 gauge

I started both my sons (twins) on pumps .Put one shell in the chamber and learn to make the first one count. They were 12 not the biggest (that came later) suffered no trauma and were shooting 3 shells by the end of that season .Now 30 years later they both shoot inertia guns but at the time price was definitely a consideration

Best money I ever spent (on guns) WAS the youth model pump mentioned in my earlier posts. It’s on the second grandson and both have been now shooting clays since age 8. Can’t do that with a full size shotgun unless the kids are bigger than average. Start them early and they not only get hooked but they improve at lightning speed and by the time they are shooting full size guns they can hold their own either way most shotgunners. To each their own but if they are interested, imo, it’s paramount to start them as early as possible if you want to increase their chance of success.

The most wonderful thing about not being unique with special needs body type is shotgun fit.

There are very few children that have been as fortunate as my son to shoot the amount of targets he has and in the locations.

For casual use and hunting your information is more better.

I guess my grandsons are unusually small since. Neither one of them could effectively mount and shoot a shotgun with 14 1/2” LOP when the kid is 4’ tall. My son started out on a “full size” vintage 12ga sxs hammer gun shooting light BP loads but he was 12 yo and over 5’6”.
 
I started one of my kids with a Remington 1100 youth model. Twenthy or so years later he still carries it for Grouse hunting. Its compact size make it a light weight quick handling gun that is super easy to walk with.
 
I’ve had an 870 and nova in 20 youth , imo the nova is worth the bit extra in cost. The action/ trigger is just way better. Recoil felt less as well but that’s subjective I think due to ergos
 
I’m currently on the hunt for a youth 20 or 28ga. I’m leaning towards a semi auto for recoil reasons mainly. But hear reports of some not cycling light targets loads too well.

The SX-3/4 and Silver 20 gauge have been flawless with light target loads, and the Mossberg SA20, has also done well, we have had all three show uo to shoot skeet.
