Looking for a good recipe, Have not been able to get an accurate load using a tikka 1-8 twist barrel. Have not tried many loads or different powders. My range time is limited so If anyone has a good recipe lets hear it!

Thanks in advance!

HI gpracer
I tryed the 75 gr Amax but had poor results,in a Rem 700 with 1/9 twist used Varget from 23 to 26gr in 1/4gr loadings best group .785" The only thing my gun would shoot at 1000 yards was Hornady 75gr HPBT match they got to .390" at 100 with lots of Varget 2945fps, I also tried 75gr VLD Bergers with no good results at all.
My new rem 700 XCR Tactical 26" will shoot .250" and less if I do my job with 69gr sierra's and Rl15 or Varget and H4895 works okay. but the 69gr will not shoot well after 600 yards
good luck hope this is of some help to you.

there are no shortcuts, all rifles behave differently. If your range time is limited, then you're not going to get a great load. For whatever it's worth, I've found that my Tikka t3 likes 25.0 of Varget or 23.5 of benchmark over a CCI magnum primer with a moly-coated AMAX. However, you're still going to have to do your own legwork, as there's no guarantee that these will work in your rifle accurately, or safely.

75 Amax

I've had decent results using a max load of HVarget over CCIBR4 with necksized WW brass. Not mind blowing accuracy, but decent. Sub MOA.

Good info for sure, I have not yet tried Varget, I have been using the cci 450 mag primers though, Tried RL 10 X and IMR 4895, various powder loads, all I got were Keyholes at 100 yards...

For some reason all my rifle loads seem to progress to Varget powder It almost seems to be a universal powder.....

What length are you seating the bullets to in the Tikka?

I use 24 grains of varget under a 77 gr SMK with great results.

I love the "crunch" sound of varget when you seat the bullet.

I do realize that the Amax's are different animals though.

I use CCI 450 to ignite a near max charge of Varget in collet sized Win brass behind 75 and 80gr Amax. Print data is available from Hodgdon website.

Work up in very small increments. I was tuning in .1gr and it showed up at 200yds.

My LR match load is 75 AMAX over 26gr Varget in Winchester cases using a WSR primer. I'm shooting them out of a 24" bbl'd AR15 (1:8). Some may think they're too hot (MV=2930fps) , but I've seen absolutely no pressure signs so far. They're strictly single shot loading though as the overall length is 2.495". I'm going to try shooting this combo out to 1000y this Spring and see how they perform. I've shot this combo out to 800y in precision matches very successfully. :dancingbanana: I'm following mysticplayer's efforts to shoot this load out to 1 mile with great interest. I know that at least at 1000y, my load is still supersonic :D

I've had my nbest results by throwing my Amax's in the "don't work" bin, and grabbing some bergers , Seirras or Wildcats.:D
Anybody wanna buy a bunch of moly'd 75's?

I had the same problem with a Tikka as you are having. None of my pet loads that were excellent in my other 8" twist bolt guns would shoot worth a damn in the Tikka . Being to old and stubborn to give up I tried every powder I could find data for. When I got around to AA2520, it shot .5 MOA with 25. Gr and the A-Max 15 thou off and a WSR. Funny thing is , after about 1500 rounds of those it will shot bugholes with about any powder/ bullet I try.
Hope this helps.

Thanks again for all the info, This bullet has been the only one to date that I have been unable to find a load for, I guess I'm spoiled as all the other loads in the Tikka from 45 grains up to 60 grains have been very easy to work up...

Should be able to give it another go this weekend!

Try VV N540 and the berger, has to be seated into the rifling (bergers have a soft core and do not like to jump). I use Lapua brass and CCI BR primers. Will not list the load as it is over max. 540 worked good with the AMAX as well

I am giving the 75gr A-max/Varget/GM205's a try with my stevens 200 , and I must say at the starting loads it grouped horrable but as I worked up at .2gr increments it got tighter and tighter. I am still working up ,but I found a few loads in the middle/top end that are worth going back too with confedence that they will produce some bugholes ;)

Still no luck! Tested 3 loads 24.2 Varget, 24.6 Varget, and 25.0 Varget, all keyholed at 100 yards, I do not think my rifle is a 1 in 8 twist, I've got a feeling its 1 in 12. My buddy has a newer T3 Varmit, I'm going to give that one a try. Is there any way I can check the twist in my rifle?

It is reasonable to assume that if BCboy finds good load for his 200 that it will natrually be a good load in other 200's or are these things barrel specific ?

The Tikka T3 Varmint in .223 that I have right here has 8", roll stamped right into the barrel.

throback, No every barrel is different, however his load might be a good starting point. It it always wise to start a grain or 2 lower with someone elses load and proceed with caution.

Use a slotted jag on your cleaning rod that freely spins in the handle. Put a patch in the jag that will become a firm fit in the bore. Push the patch into the bore just past the throat. Mark the clean rod 1ft from the rear of the action.

Push the rod forward and if the patch is tight enough, the rod will spin. Count the number of revolutions the mark makes before reaching the action.

In a 12 twist, it will rotate once. In an 8 twist, 1.5 times.

Odds are you have a slow twist.
