Tikka 243 WIN, heavy bullets

What do you want to know?
A 1:8 will spin the 103/107/108 ELDm and x’s and Amax’s.

Seen a pile of stuff killed with the 105 Amax to waaaay out there.

Hello,

I just realized that my new Tikka T3x Varmint in 243 Win has a 1 in 8" twist barrel, usually 243 Win barrels have a 1 in 10" twist.
That means my tikka should be good to shoot heavier 6mm bullets.

Does anybody have experience and can share?
Now your right in there with the 6 Creedmoor Guys ! Except for the ####ty shoulder angle !

So it is comparable to the 6mm Creedmoor, because of the faster twist?
I believe the 6mm Creedmoor has a 1-8 twist as well.

At the moment I have Varget powder, IMR 4831 and Reloader 22 on hand, I guess they should be fine.

Another rifle in 243 Win that I owned once didn't like the 100 grs bullets at all, and they keyholed.

So I will try heavier bullets in the Tikka then.

It should be a little faster than the CM, more case capacity. - dan

About 1% increase in velocity (30 fps +/-) over the Creed with the extra capacity

1:8 will play nice with most bullets out there, maybe a bit marginal closer to sea level with 95gr LRX, 110SMK, 115 Berger and the new 117gr TMK from Sierra

Be careful, CGN will be angry when they find out the Tikka 243 has been messed with and no longer has the legacy 1:10 twist rate :giggle:

Thanks for the info, appreciated.

My axis 2 in .243 has a 9.25 to 1. I won it in a raffle and planned it as a fun varmint vaporizer. Real heavy bullets were never in the plans so I've never tried over 100gr but they shot well. 1 in 8 in the Tikka sounds attractive. Go shoot some darts and let us know how it goes.

Sorry to high jack the thread, but have you tried any light for caliber bullets in your gun? If a guy wants to also shoot light for caliber bullets, 58gr v-max, are they going to spin apart before they get to a coyote? 1-8" @ 3800 fps is 342k rpm, seems like a lot.

I’ve burnt up 243 & 6CM barrels shooting heavies. Not much to separate them velocity wise. But I’d go 6CM in the future.

I experimented with StaBall6.5, H4350, H1000, and IMR4451. SB6.5 produced stellar velocities & SDs in both chamberings with 100+ grain projectiles and is what I settled on for both.

Good luck!

I shoot the 112 match burners but the Berger stability calculator says they are just barely stable at my altitude. They group very well out of my barrel.

Lots of good heavy bullets made for the other 6mm cartridges.

The case capacities are within 3 grains of each other, depending on who manufactured the case. Usually the 243 has the very slight extra capacity.

Basically comparing oranges to oranges.

If two rifles are chambered for both, and everything is equal, even RJ would be hard pressed to prove one is better than the other, without winking.

I have the same twist in my Tikka 243, it handles the 58s just fine.

I had an 8 twist 6XC, shot 117 grain Dtacs from it, accuracy was stellar. Used H4831SC if I remember correctly, and velcity was good too--would have to check my logs as I can't remember exact numbers right now.

Probably bullet dependent, not all will react the same. I haven't shot anything lighter than 80gr ELDvt in my 7.7t 6mm Creed, but in my 1:7t 22 Creed I have had some good accuracy with 40gr Nosler BT @ 4150 fps
