VZ-58s and more...FAQs are Post 1

Q: Considering this monster thread, what do you think of the VZ-58 type rifle?

  • It is a beauty as it comes, and a must have, since it drives Libs bonkers.

  • It is best pimped out and dressed up, a far cry from an NDP convention.

  • It is true it was the first cool gun in the Cdn. market for a long while, but I'll pass.

  • It makes me think of snide remarks, as I am a gun snob and the 58 is affordable.

Yeah man at stave lake it snowed, then it hailed, then it rained for 5 minutes, then it was sunny.

Only 200 rounds? Whatsa matter with you??? I woulda blown away 500 if I had time :D I'm about 2/3's done my first crate, and I've got two more ready to go :)

I don't know where Stave Lake is. Is it a far drive from Vancouver? I'm moving there in the fall...and the traffic to get to PoCo doesn't appeal to me.

You may have more Czech ammo than me, but I have 1000 rounds of Wolf. :D
I'm still considering selling it though, I don't mind cleaning my gun afterwards. I could probably get a straight trade for Czech from someone. How many rounds for the wolf remains to be seen...

As for the 200 rounds...yeah...I'm working on it. You gotta pace yourself or else you'll run out before the really nice weather comes in!

I'll trade you some czech for wolf! :D

Drop me a line when you come to Van, I'll show you some shooting spots. It takes me about an hour to an hour and a half to get to Stave..

Very early stages of the Rodeck Grip. Some more shaping to come. Lots of sanding needed still.

It is impossible to make it exactly like the original. First, if the grip goes more to the rear, the magazine is hard to take out. Look at the AK. There is metal in front of its mag, and no so much on the VZ. The VZ mag is bigger too. I thinned it out somewhat front to back to fit my hand better and give a bit extra room for the mag to come out.

It is no simple task making a VZ grip from scratch. Having it fit and be solid is the hard part. Where it attachs up front is a real ##### to duplicate in wood, by hand. Earlier attempts to exactly duplicate it proved I could do it, but the thin wood was fragile and chipped. So I came up with a new arrangment that is easier to make with hand tools. So, when someone asks where the Romanian grip is, they have realize the pain involved.

I am thinking about keeping it wood finish. It will match the pistol grip I made. The upper handguard is another affair. I doubt I want to take that one on.

^I think you should give the upper guard a shot, not just so it matches, but because if you're gonna do the job you should do it 100%.

Good work. It looks cool.

I don't know if that is the final version.
If it's not, then moving it a bit forward would help to solve
the "clear the mag" issue
while not afecting the general look too much.
Also, curving the rear of the pistol grip would also help clear the mag
and make it closer to the look of the original.

I don't mean to interfere with your project, but
you don't have to use wood or laminate.
If I would do that project, I would use the original vz lower grip
and hold the pistol grip with 2 bolts screwed from the inside of the grip.
Epoxy (or similar) and sanding would make it look seamless.
Painting would make it look like wood. But that's just me.
It seems that you know what you are doing.

I do realize the pain involved.
I hope that in return you realize I never-ever wanted to offend you.
Bugging, on the other hand, is a different matter.
You are still my hero :)

Hey, anybody wants to donate
a RPK buttstock and an AK style pistol grip for Deckard's next project?
This guy has a lot of promise.

Some more shaping and finishing. Sanding still to come.

Now, as to color, should I stain it, paint it, or what? I can paint it to look like the Czech red stock. I made and painted this...

I could duracoat it. I could keep it blond. What do you guys think? Do you give a flying...?

Making an RPK stock would not be hard.
