VZ-58s and more...FAQs are Post 1

Q: Considering this monster thread, what do you think of the VZ-58 type rifle?

  • It is a beauty as it comes, and a must have, since it drives Libs bonkers.

  • It is best pimped out and dressed up, a far cry from an NDP convention.

  • It is true it was the first cool gun in the Cdn. market for a long while, but I'll pass.

  • It makes me think of snide remarks, as I am a gun snob and the 58 is affordable.

Wish my wife cleaned my guns like that.

That soldier is a world class track and javelin athlete.

I doubt I'd bother building more. But it would be easier, now that I figured it out. How?

I measured the distance from the front of the stock where it engages and then to the rear, where the pin locks in. You will need a dremel with cutting discs and metal shaping bits, drill, and a bandsaw. The inside is not bored out. I cut a length of hardwood for the lower part of the handguard which may or may not include the Romanian grip. If it does, then the grip will be too thick and will need lots of work to thin it. The sides are laminate glued on to that first piece of hardwood. (If you make the lower hardwood block right, the sides won't even be needed. That is why my next one will be Hungarian sheet metal sided grips.) Everything is sanded down smooth. I will next stain it a more honey color and seal it with polyurethane. On one side I intend to install a picatinny rail of the type that screws onto AR handguards.

These are the Hungarian type (middle)...

I have noticed that the case mouths of the brass from my 858 are oval, not round. Has anyone else noticed this, or is it unique to my rifle. What would be causing this?
