Amazing!

This week on Prairie Pursuit, we head into southern Saskatchewan farmland chasing one of the most challenging animals on the prairie — moose.

With an either-### tag in hand, Paul Benson sets out on his first-ever moose hunt. Early season brings plenty of sightings, but standing crops, limited access, and tight landowner considerations make clean opportunities hard to come by. Bulls are close. Sometimes very close. But patience wins out.

As the season shifts into late fall, snow hits the ground and pressure builds. After weeks of miles, permission calls, and missed chances, one final opportunity unfolds — a careful stalk, a long setup, and a moment that makes every step worth it.

Prairie land moose aren’t supposed to get this big. But sometimes, everything comes together.

25 years ago I saw a Bull Moose near Oyen, Alberta. The local Baseball Team is called the Oyen Pronghorns to give you an idea of what the terrain is like.
