New Shooter Question: Budget Stock Options for Ruger 10/22

Hello everyone,

I just joined the community and wanted to say hi. I got my PAL a couple of months ago and I’m very new to firearms, shooting, and hunting sports—so please bear with me if my questions are basic.
I gave myself a Christmas gift last year and picked up a Ruger 10/22 as my first rifle (bought on sale at Bass Pro). Overall I’m really happy with it, but once I received it, the factory stock felt very plastic-y and a bit cheap. I understand it’s a budget rifle and that’s expected, but I’m thinking about upgrading the stock to something that feels nicer while still staying on a budget.

I’ve been looking at the Hogue overmolded stock and really like the classic look. I’m mainly interested in traditional or classic-style stocks rather than tactical ones.
I had a few questions for the more experienced members here:
  • Are there any other good budget-friendly (below $300) stock options you’d recommend besides Hogue?
  • Is there anything specific I should be aware of when buying a stock (for example, barrel size or compatibility)?
  • My rifle is the Ruger® 10/22® Carbine Rimfire Rifle – .22 LR.
  • Do you know any good Canadian websites or online stores where I can buy stocks?
  • Lastly, do you think it’s even worth changing the stock, or should I just stick with the factory one?
I’m planning to do the stock swap myself, so I’m a bit nervous since I’m still a newbie and don’t want to mess anything up.
Thanks in advance for your opinions and suggestions—I really appreciate the help.

Cheers!

Look at the magpul x22 stock. Very well made. Comes in a few different colors and is definitely an upgrade to the factory stock. Mdt also has a decent stock as well called the field stock. Both are under $300 i believe.

I picked up an MDT Fieldstock for a 10/22 build I am doing and it looks great. Aluminum bedding block, adjustable length of pull, cheek riser, not that heavy. It is plastic, though and while not tactical it is also not traditional.

I have a Hogue stock off another rifle. Not anything wrong with it and very usable, but I wouldn't say it is an especially nice stock and I would put the money towards something nicer.

(EDIT: Check out the MDTTAC.COM for the Feildstock and Oryx for 10/22)

I have used the mdt field, mdt oryx, krg bravo and both magpul units.

Unsupported use (mapleseed style) the magpuls or field are good because of lighter weight. Magpuls lack the adjustability of the mdt rigs.

Oryx is tail heavy with a stock 10/22 and barrel + out of your price range.

Krg is best for nrl.22 / orps. You can add the right amount of weights to get ballance point where you want for supported positional shooting.

Hogues with there over mould products get a spongey feel after wear that I do not admire.

Adjustability of fit is worth the upgrade from magpul to mdt field for me.

I have most of the mdt stuff. They are from CANADA and that Trumps (pun intended) all others in these changing times. I like my mdt field 10/22 the best for user interface and price point. Too bad you missed the annual black friday sale. They pretty well give stuff away. Save up.

Stock o.g. set up also lacks attachment point for bipod with out buying a fancy barrel band set up.
Bipod can be nice.

Rabbit hole warning.........
10/22 building is addictive..you will have a hard time not to not justify future upgrades once its sitting pretty in a aftermarket chasis/stock.

Good luck.

Lots of good suggestions so far with good points being made for all the examples. Another option is a Victor Titan, they’re Merkin but they become available on the EE occasionally. They work well and I have owned a couple.

The X22 stock is about $100 and a really nice upgrade on the factory offering. If I wanted to spend more I am sure there are gains with the MDT field stock worth having, but the value on the X22 is excellent for an all arounder.

You might want to consider a WTB add in the Firearms exchange section of CGN. Someone who upgraded to a Magpul for their 10/22 might have a wood stock they'd be willing to part with. I think the wood stock version of the 10/22 is quite good. You can put a cheek pad on the wood stock to get a bit more height.

Thanks for the suggestions! I really appreciate you pointing out the Magpul X22 and the MDT Field Stock—both sound like solid upgrades, especially at that price point. I’ll definitely take a closer look at them. Appreciate the help!

Thanks for sharing your hands-on experience with the MDT Fieldstock. The aluminum bedding block and adjustability are big selling points, and it’s good to hear it balances well without adding much weight. I agree—if you’re already spending the money, it makes sense to go with something that really feels like an upgrade. Appreciate the link tip as well.

This is fantastic insight. thank you for taking the time to break down so many options and use cases. The comparison across unsupported vs. positional shooting is especially helpful. I really appreciate the notes on balance, adjustability, and long-term feel. Also fair warning received on the 10/22 rabbit hole 😄 Great info all around.

Thanks for the suggestion! I don’t hear the Victor Titan mentioned as often, so it’s good to have that option on the radar. I’ll keep an eye out on the EE. appreciate you sharing your experience with them.

Dlask's closing sale includes/included some very nice Turkish Walnut 10/22 stocks.
That’s a great heads up, thank you. Turkish walnut sounds very tempting, especially with a closing sale involved. I’ll definitely check that out while there’s still availability.

Appreciate the perspective on value. The X22 really does seem hard to beat for the price, especially as a well-rounded upgrade over the factory stock. Good to hear confirmation from long-term use.

I checked and Dlask is still showing stock and they look real nice. The price is cheap enough you can buy 3 for around $300

That’s a really good idea.thanks for the suggestion. I hadn’t considered a WTB post, and you’re right that the factory wood stock is actually quite nice. Adding a cheek pad could be a simple and effective solution.

I've had mine in a Magpul stock for several years now. It works well, is a solid stock for a decent price, and makes it feel like an adult size rifle.
Thanks for sharing your long-term experience with the Magpul stock. Good to hear it holds up well over time and really improves the overall feel of the rifle. Im definitely considering that
