Sandhill Cranes

We have them up here and they are Legal to hunt up here too. But we don’t have fields where they hang out, so I wouldn’t know how or where to go at it. Same for most ducks and geese, not many fields up here so a different way to hunt them would be needed for sure.
I feel that “duck” hunting is something you grew up with and learn from others and not something you learn yourself ?!?!

We have a very good population of sandhill cranes in northern part of Ontario, but no season. The federal agency responsible for this is now considering creating an open season, possibly as early as this fall, in the Hudson/James Bay Lowlands, and the Algoma, Manitoulin, and Temiskaming districts in agricultural fields. They are becoming a problem for some farmers in terms of their numbers and damage to crops. I see large groups of them in the fields along the North Shore of Lake Huron in the Algoma district in my travels. They do look tasty...

I shoot some cranes most years. They do taste OK, and are great in a stir fry. But beware of over cooking! The meat makes a pretty good leather substitute if over cooked. The worst thing you can do with crane is roast one. Great breast meat when sliced thin, with a light marinade, and cooked quick and hot and not too much, on a BBQ.

I have a friend who shot some last years, and cooked them ala Meateater's instructions- he said the breasts were great as long as they weren't overcooked.

I think this is the key element here is lots of people like there meat cooked all the way through. I’m more of a rare to medium rare but never more type of guy.

Has anyone here ever ate one? When I lived in Northern Ontario people called them "Ribeye of the Sky".
I've hunted and eaten them several times.

They are very good, maybe not as good as canvasbacks tho, but definitely one of the best fowl to eat.

However, I think most that refer to them as "ribeye of the sky" have likely never eaten them and just parroting what they have heard.

Yes, they are very good, but I'd take a real ribeye over a crane any day
