116FHSAK Savage rifle

Bound to be sub-moa, value is good as they don't cost much to start with, but the muzzlebrake kills it for me.
 
I was looking at one in a .308. The one I looked at was very nice. I just wasn't able to shoot it. :mad: The way I see it with the muzzlebreak is I am probably going to be shooting it more at the range/sighting it in compared to at an animal by about a 100:1 ratio. The one or two loud shots in the bush without much ear protection won't be too bad.

I have the 116 without the brake, and I love it. It shoots the #### out of anything I aim at,(.300 win mag) and although it kicks like a mule (6.75 lbs) I think of it as my go to rifle. I am just not too impressed with the stock. I find the forearm a little too flimsy, and I have been looking for a laminated stock aftermarket, but I cant seem to find one. My rifle has the detachable magazine, and I am now finding out that no one makes a replacement stock for the long action savage action with the drop mag configuration.
I mean the stock isn't THAT BAD, or anything, I just wanted something stronger. (my old man borrowed the gun, and left it too close to the campfire, it melted the surface of a part of the forearm, and it now looks like ####, But I guess I am stuck with it.) I dont want to contact savage for a similar replacement as I dont want the same one. BUT....... every other thing about this gun I LOVE. it is just the most accurate gun I own, or have owned.
It is pretty reliable too, I hunt in Northwest Territories, in severe climates, and it has never let me down.
But from what I understand, having a muzzle brake leaves you with 2" less of actual barrel and that barrel is necessary for the magnums to develop their speed when using the slow burning powders that magnums use. So I think if you use the brake, you wont get the bullet speed, then if you dont get the bullet speed, actual trajectory might be different from what you would expect from that rifle.

The brake is adjustable, you should be able to turn it right off. BTW, you don't really need one on a .308.;)
 
but if you are gonna turn it off, why bother to get it in the first place?
It is correct that its only needed on magnums. But if you lop 2 inches of barrel off to accommodate the brake, and then use the brake, you have a
22" barrel for a magnum round that needs 24" to get maximum bullet speed (or at least get maximum efficiency from a relatively inefficient magnum cartridge).
I just dont see the true usefulness of this system. Why not just get a .30-06
with the lower recoil and NOISE, than deafen yourself to get the advantage of lower recoil.
 
have a savage 16 in 300wsm kicks a bit but i fitted it with a nice recoil pad and its not that bad very accurate!! had it out in -40 weather and it functioned flawlessly after being outside for and hour very satisfied with the gun.

It comes on the gun, whether you use it or not. If you leave it turned off, its the same as having a 24" barrel without a brake.

Maybe use it at the range during 50 - 100 round sessions, but turn it off while hunting to save your hearing.
