Has anyone been able to remove the splined rod that holds the springs and buffer from the bolt and replaced it with another shaft that has a good buffer. I know they are pressed in the bolt but I don't know if they can be removed without damaging the rod. There are a few junk (looking) bolts out there with good buffers. The only price I could get from a dealer on a new unit was "more than the POS is worth" ha ha.

Maybe this should have been in Gunsmith Forum.

Numrich has a 'used' bolt assy for ca $40 USD, would be ca $60-70 CDN with shipping, but might take a 1/2-year to get here. Doesn't look like they sell the 'parts' individually. Maybe you can contact Savage in Lakefield ?
You can find used 64s for $200-ish since they're plinkers, not target rifles. Mine gets 2-3MOA with a red-dot at 50.
Looks (in Numrich pic) that there is a pin in the bolt body ? Maybe that will release that rod ? I haven't had mine apart for a while to recall what might work. And never had any probs with my bolt assy; is yours broken ?
