The Winchester Model 21 28 gauge is probably my holy grail gun. Here is one for sale, on Guns America.Cheap, only $19,250 U.S. .Now if I just had $20,000 U.S. laying around doing nothing ,I would be on my way.:)

It is a heavy gun for a 28 gauge , weighting 7,6 pounds. No doubt because the barrels were bored from 20 gauge barrel blanks. However, the Model 21 was a well built gun and none of the ones I have seen were very light.I have seen 12 and 20 gauge Model 21 guns, but never a 28 gauge.:(

Any one, have any thoughts or comments on the gun?

The Win 21 is a great gun a 28 would be sweet but at 7.6 pounds is a deal breaker for me in 28 gauge. Heavy for gauge barrels dont do it for me. Most modern choke tube barrels also fall into that catagory not all but most.(n)

the win 21 the most hyped and over rated sxs ever all gauges are way to heavy
great action if you want to build a double rifle
the idea of sxs's was the handling in the field
Parker did it correct with all the frame sizes
yes i have owned and shot 21's but sold them off for reasons mentioned
i have a hand full of parker's but not a 28 ga because they to are a pricey gun
i do have a 20 and a 16 on a o frame which likely the nicest handle 16 ga ever
just saying

Agree, too heavy for my choice of a 28 gauge field gun.Still would be nice to have one to look at on the wall .:)Shoot a few times.:)

Yes indeed ,all gauges are heavy for the Model 21 ,but still a well made and solid gun,:)I have not seen a 28 gauge Parker, but have an Ithaca 28 gauge SXS.Beautiful light gun for upland use.Could of bought one several years ago,but did not.In hind sight I probably should have.:(

Over the years I've owned numerous 12 ga SxS shotguns, too many to list but most I've sold except one Cape Gun, one wall hanger and my all time favorite, 1937 Winchester M21.

The Parkers, Remingtons, Ithicas all had way too much drop on the stock and seemed clunky and were not pleasant to hunt with or shoot. The L.C. Smith F/W was the only gun lighter than my M21. The A.H Fox HE was a great gun but way too heavy. Nothing even came close or comes close to my M21; it comes up quick and points so natural it's balance is superb and a delight to carry.

My Winchester M21 is a 12 ga gun, in excellent original condition, weighing on my digital scale at 7 lbs 6 oz. Because the M21 is so well balanced it feels light to me where others feel clumsy and clunky. Winchester proofed these M21's at 200% over proof. A very robust well designed and well balanced shotgun that holds value like no other. There's a good reason I sold all the others but kept the Model 21.

I noticed that Win21 28g was put together by CSMC from original Winchester parts. I’ve heard good to bad comments on their products/workmanship so I’m hesitant to ‘pull the trigger on it’. I’ve seen/handled ‘original’ Mod 21s in 28g for sale in the USA starting at $28,000USD a few years ago. If I was only working for the CBC or the political party supporting it I would be financially capable to buy it and a tractor trailer full of 28g Remington premium target loads. Anyone in here have any history with CSMC??

I suspect an original M21 in 28 ga, manufactured and engraved by Winchester, would be worth considerably more than one made and engraved by CSMC. Especially a pre-war model.

I now remember where I got to see some of those beautiful 28g shotguns. My son was in the market for another sporting clays Krieghoff so we crossed the American border at Windsor into Michigan and our pilgrimage took us to Pacific sporting arms. That’s where we got to see and handle the incredible display of premium high-end shotguns. We still talk about our trip there and are planning to go back again. Some people have a lot of money and appreciation for fine shotguns that if the truth be told are an art form in themselves. Many of these shotguns are on consignment and have seen very little if any use. I have several (lol) 28g shotguns in my collection but as of yet not the holy grail … the Win21 in 28g !!!! Working on it…Going to be another roadtrip to the USA this spring.

Thoughts and comments on this gun.

Well if it didn't say Winchester on it and Americans weren't so absorbed with collecting Americana, good, bad or indifferent, then the value would be in the low $3k USD range. As it should be for a relatively ugly, 50% engraving coverage, blued receiver, outlandishly heavy 28 gauge.

It is, to me, a classic example where collector frenzy has distorted the market to an obscene level. But, it's a free market and people are welcome to do what they want. I have holy grail guns but I try to pick ones that are widely recognized as the best of breed. A 7 1/2 pound 28 gauge does not qualify.

I like to use guns for hunting, not the various clays games. If I'm going to lug a 7 1/2 pound gun through the woods behind my dog, it will be a versatile 12 gauge like my Lindner made Diamond Quality Charles Daly. But really, I wouldn't even do that. Upland kinda tops out for me with 6 3/4 pound guns and most are 1/2 a pound or more lighter than that.

Yes you are right. If it did not have the Winchester name on it,it would probably sell for much less.Just the name Winchester on a firearm, often adds to its value.

Also, agree on a light weight gun to use in the uplands in the 28 gauge. The Model 21 was probably Winchester's top of the firearm line.So that adds value to it.For myself,if I had a 28 gauge Model 21 it would see little use.Probably take it out a few times to bag something with, but the main value for myself ,of a gun like the 28 gauge Model 21 would be the pride of ownership.:)Just to say I had one,I guess.:)

To me it is a holy grail gunmbut not a holy grail gun to use afield.:)

This is the other Win21…28g I’m thinking about, okay drooling over my screenshot. And again it’s probably not a 100% built by Winchester gun so I’m dragging my heels a bit, not to mention my wallet isn’t exactly jumping out of my back pocket either. But a beautiful shotgun like a beautiful woman, sometimes its hard to say no even if she’s a few pounds overweight. lol

Canvasback…you are 500% right in your evaluation and opinions of the Win21 but you really know how to hurt a guy that is a 28gaholic. lol

I do have a stable full of lightning fast 28g shotguns, many Browning O/U, many Model 12s, a slick slim little Benelli Sporting Clay and was recently blessed with a princess… a tiny little Ithaca 37 with a gorgeous English straight stock in 28g. These are all fast handling shotguns that I use on fast pigeons busting out of barns and silos. But I don’t have a slightly overweight Win21, 28g…. YET !!
Just thinking that all the gals I knew in the 115-120 lb weight class were great but some of my best memories were top heavy and in the 135lb range.

…and 28g gauge 2….thanks for keeping this thread alive !!

All types of Winchester guns in general were never lightweights but the quality and durabilty cannot be questioned all rock solid shootable guns. Weight can be a plus or a minus in variable situations Ex location and application to name a few. Win 21 heavy yes but I would take one in a second with right deal.

A 28gaholic.Are you sure ,you are not a full blown addict like myself? :)

How many Winchester 28 gauge Model 12 guns do you have? The 28 gauge Model 12 guns are on the heavy side, but still nice shotguns.

I have an Ithaca Model 37 28 gauge, bought it the first year they came out.It was the first 28 gauge Ithaca Model 37 sold in Canada.

From what I read ,on the picture you posted of the Model 21, it has a set of 28 gauge barrels and a set of .375 Winchester barrels.Very interesting gun.I do remember reading ,that the old Winchester Company did make a few Model 21 firearms with .405 Winchester barrels.

My name is Bill…and I am a 28g addict. lol
Ive lost track of my 28s, maybe 2 dozen?? There are a few I forgot to mention. A High grade Perazzi O/U 28g that I trade back and forth with my son. He is a closet 28g collector and shooter, still has a brand new in the box unfired Win Mod 23 28g…. I was willing to shoot it for him but no… its still a virgin. Ive also purchased and still have a bunch of Krieghoffs all based on the K20 smaller frame. One is a 3 barrel set Sporting clay model 20,28,410 and the last one is a Parcours model 30” fixed choke barrels in 28g. Krieghoffs are well made, highly overpriced guns and are still heavy and swing like a club. Have a love/hate relationship with them. More suited for clays, not ideal for feathers in my opinion, but what do I know…The Win21 in 28g in spite of their 7.5 lbs balance and swing much better than the Krieghoffs. Almost forgot, bought 3 Rizzinis BR110 in 20,28,410g 2 years ago. Great shotguns that Ive only dragged out to the club several times. Never fell in love with them and Im prepared to dump them(and I rarely sell guns) but I’ll divert to money to a Mod21…28g…. Just because.

Nice group of 28 gauge guns.I Have a Winchester Model 23 28 gauge, but it has been shot:)Bagged some game with it,but not a lot. When I feel like taking a 28 gauge SXS afield ,it is my AYA Model 3A that usually gets the call. The Model 23 28 gauge is choked IC/M.The Aya is choked M/F.I prefer the M/F to IC/M.

The 28 gauge Model 12 guns you have are they Browning or Winchester guns?
